What should I put on my scar?

As instructed by the practice nurse, last night we removed the dressing and steri-strips to reveal the 'shark bite'.  All looks good, and healing up nicely.

I was just wondering whether anyone had any recommendations as to what to do to help the scar heal further and improve it (massage?  Vastly expensive lotions? etc) or is it best to leave well alone and let Mother Nature take her course?

Thanks for any thoughts

Neil

Hi Neil,

good question! I'm leaving to mother nature, except for the odd smear of lavender oil, but someone on this site recommended AVON SOS at £3.40, which I plan to try, once i track down an Avon lady, if they still exist!

Hi Neil,

I have been massaging bio oil into my wound. In addition the physio showed me how to do a deeper tissue massage to the scar and surrounding area. It was quite sore afterwards so I researched it further. There are videos on you tube. It reduces sensitivity and improves flexibility in the tissues. The physio did it again today and it does feel much better.

I I bought the bio oil from Priceline.....the equivalent in th UK Would be Boots chemist. It wasn't expensive, when it's finished I'll probably use a moisturiser like the physio did.

All the best for your shark bite 😄

I use vaseline intesive care moisteriser lotion, it's lovely.

Hi Neil

I`ve been massaging my scar with Bio-oil & its got rid of all the lumpiness underneath. Its quite expensive to buy in the Chemist but if you have a Boyes near you its a lot cheaper. Its only a small bottle cost around £7 but I`ve been using it for around 4 months & only used half.

Hi Neil

i use natural coconut oil found in supermarkets in the food Isle! It's used for cooking but has a natural vitamin E in it! So multi use for skin and hair!

A little goes a long way... But wait until all scabs have healed up.

hi mic, yes us  avon ladies still exist i am one lol, you can actually buy  the avon sos oil direct from avon themselves, by going on their web page

i have been lucky my scar has healed up lovely only time i notice it lumpy is when i have done alot of walking, all being well i will get my other hip done some time in september

My doctor (and three fellow hippies) recommended BioOil -- I have been using it February, still on the same bottle and I had bilateral surgery so using twice as much.

It is not greasy and does seem to help - I also find the fact that as i massage in the oil, the muscles also feel a bit better

sounds like progress is going well, keep up the good work!

Aha I'd forgotten about this ... We have some of this somewhere

& I can keep mosquitos at bay at the same time!   Not that we're exactly overwhelmed by them in North London confused

Thanks

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions & ideas

ahhhh interesting --- I live in Maine, so far the "flying bugs" have been minimal - maybe the BioOil is helping out, cool!

Hi Neil

Bio Oil is great - I order with my online shopping from Sainsburys.

Not a bit greasy - massage in small circular movements over scar

Regards Linda xx

hey  Lyn, ty, but, rather buy my SOS from a pretty AVON lady like you!

I asked nurse about creaming scar and she said leave it alone. Would even let me shower for v10 days which is tomorrow. As I have to go to daughters house to shower ( mine over bath) I just waited.

I put e45 cream on mine - not at all expensive and good if you have sensitive skin

Just to add I didn't start putting on the e45 (lotion sorry not cream - its a bit more liquid so easier to apply) straight away left it a week or 2 after the clips came out.

Funny: I've had several professionals tell me Bio Oil is 'useless' and a 'waste of money'.

For myself, I've found these, over 4 THRs, have helpful; in order of preference:

1) Natural argan oil

2) Topricin cream (from Amazon)

3) Pure lanolin

4) Eucerin

Hi Neil, yes I agree with all the others , bio oil is the way to go, most women use this during pregnancy to help prevent stretch marks, so good luck , hope you have a great recoverybiggrin

Goodness .. so many choices !   good to know when I run out of Bio oil - apparently i didn;t massage the scar deep enough and PT did a number on my scar to get the lumps out ... not such a pleasant feeling bit feels much better ...

she used nivea because it was at hand ...
