What to ask at 6 wk check up?

Hello everyone,

I have my 6wk check with my Consultant tomorrow I have a small list of questions for him but whenever I go to see my GP for instance I come away and think 'oh I wish I'd asked about that'. If you've been to your check up what did you ask and/or what did you wish you'd asked?

Thanks

Jane

Hi. When I went I too had things to ask but my consultant said that I could more or less resume normal lifestyle so didn't ask much!  Maybe just check on things like 90 degree rule, sleeping on operated side,  swimming, flying if appropriate. He gave me letter to show in case  I set off alarm at airport!  Maybe make a list of things then you won't forget. Good luck. Hope all goes well x

i had a long list but having waited till exactly 1 hour after the appointment time to be seen and marveling at the x ray of my new straight pelvis i only asked about driving and going back to work!!!

Hello again!

Well, annoyingly my appt isnt till the 8 week post op date, but I am minded to also ask:

Do I need to still take junior asprin daily?

when can I start jogging/running again?

checking out that some of the exercises given seem to break the 90degree rules and thus I havn't yet done them - should I?

Can I have some more physio appts please?

Sure more items will come to light.

Good luck

Mic

x,

I asked about swimming and what stroke I could do.  Someone else asked about dancing and what dances they could do.  The Physio said never to do the twist or anything which involved twisting, most ballroom and sequence dancing is okay if you are into that.  If you are out anywhere never to put your handbag on the floor beside you, always put it in between your feet and then bend straight down to pick it up and never to twist to one side.  Bike riding on the roads and when it was safe to do that.  Also I was given a card to show when, where I had my op, my date of birth, NHS number and hospital number in case I set off any alarms at the airport. Sleeping and the positions I could sleep in now.  I think she told me all I wanted to know.  Good luck

I just had my six week.  My questions were based on what my future plans are.  When can I make a long flight, can I drive now, is he 90 degree rule still in effect, why is my operated leg slightly longer and will it eventually fix itself......ANSWERS were, yes I can fly in June, yes I can now drive, the 90 degree rule is still in effect for the most part (a little more is okay....so I can shave my legs and cut my nails and the joint still had to settle in from inflammation and it will eventually work it's way in.  He is going to take x-rays in four weeks and make sure everything is going good.   Hope this helps.  OH and he gave me a letter so I can get a sticker to park in handycap zones while I am healing.

Take care and happy healing!

Hello ferretswife

I had a whole big list of questions and asked them all, I just forgot go ask when I could have a bath, however as he had said I could do everything apart from breastroke when I had to wait 3 mths and I can never squat. I thought I'd have a bath anyway and it was fine and very very nice.

So my suggestion is just keep writing your list of questions and ask away, anything you want you to know and everything.

I just said I have a few questions to ask and pulled out 3 sheets of paper which made him laugh.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the great ideas a few of which I hadn't thought of, knew you'd come up trumps.

I have a list with about 6 or 7 questions on. Strangely I feel more apprehensive about this (appt in an hours time) then I did about the op!

It's like having a test isn't it? Whatever happens this being Thurs before Good Friday so really feels like a Friday, if you know what I mean, I shall hopefully drive home from the hospital and walk to the pub for a celebratory sherry!

Hippy Easter to all.

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick update after my 6wk check last Thurs.

I must have been there for all of 4 mins. I think the doc just saw how I was moving (walking with just a stick now), and he said my xray was great, so that was that. Call if I have any sudden pain and apart from that see you in 12 months. Yes, I can drive if I feel confident, so I have and it's brilliant having my wings back.

He did keep saying to never forget that I have had major surgery and to take good care of myself, which I am with a lot of support from himself the ferret!

Went to watch my beloved Leeds United (I have a season ticket, crackers I know), they have moved me to a seat for walking wounded for the rest of the season. It was great to be sat in the sunshine, shame about the result though, we were thumped 3-0.

So folks very gradually life is coming back and I am looking forward to the sunny days with my gift of a new hip, don't know about everyone else but my lifes been on hold for about 7 years now!

Hippy Easter (sorry)!
