I am 4 weeks post -op on my right THR. I am still using a walker to get around most of the time. But, I do walk about from one quick point to the next without a waker. Yesterday was a painful day I felt I must have over did it the day before. Today however, I am feeling progressively better.
I ha 37 staples removed just last week. I have a 35 cm scar! They used my original scar so I have no new tracks.
I really can not complain about the little quirks of pain I am having now. Before the surgery I was walking with 2 canes in pain saying ouch, ouch, ouch, almost every step.
Hi, good luck with op. it will be fine. I went to visit relatvies for day two weeks after op. you just need to be sensible and remember all the do's and dont's. Listen to your body.
My scar is quite long, I had 36 staples and it's on my thigh. Different surgeons use different approaches so like you say ask your health team xx
Hi Nadine. I'm 9 days post op following left hip replacement. I was really nervous but absolutely fine. The first few days are hard as its sore,
swollen and I couldn't move easily. Struggled to lift my operated leg into bed had to keep buzzing nurses for help. Got "surgery blues" day 3 as
felt I was never going to make progress but a pep talk from surgeon and staff made me realise that everyone is different and responds at different paces. I've been home 5 days and no problem getting in and out of bed now so what was I worried about! It is very tiring so make sure you take plenty rest as well as doing the exercises, I try to do them after every
meal and walk twice a day. Started with one lamppost when I got home
now at 3 lampposts! Take regular pain relief and listen to your body.
Welcome and best wishes to you. I had the same issues and thoughts and was worried about everything. I have found that having a positive attitude about it makes it all better. Your outlook on it definitly has something to do with it. Everyones recovery is different as well as everyones surgery, and surgeons. I personally am 3 weeks post op TLHR and have had a really good recovery so far. I am walking with minor discomfort and been off of pain meds since day 5. I walk with a cane most of the time and unassisted in my home. my scar is about 10 inches in length and I have been driving since day 7. My goal was to be unassisted by my birthday on The 7th of April. That is 1 day short of 3 weeks post op. I am by no means saying that your goals or recovery should be as mine is. IT HAS BEEN HARD WORK and I knew that going into surgery. Please stay positive and listen to your body, as it will tell you when you need to rest and need to get off of it.
lol, read the superpath discussion nearby or better yet google superpath technique. its a combination of two minimal invasive techniques. Basically, they dont dislocate your hip first off, they dont cut your muscles but pry them apart, my scar is about 3 inches long not the usual 8. They use special toolkit to prep neck of femur before cutting head of bone off then removing from socket, then building prosthesis from three components inside you they call int shp in a botlle technique had mine done via uhcw coventry 9/3/15 any questions msg me
Hi and thanks for your response. You seem to be doing really well and I am pleased for you. I have been told 6 weeks before I can drive !!! I know that part will really get me down but I will adhere to it in the hope of making a full recovery.
Hi Ali, thanks for your response. I will, as you say, listen to my body, try to rest and do excersize aswell and build up each day. I am a little worried about pain relief as I also have a tummy problem whereby I can't tolerate strong painkillers, but will be having a word at the hospital before the op (I have already mentioned it when I had my pre-assessment). Hi Barbara, yes I am realising that each op is different as regards to what happens afterwards, size of scar, etc. I am sure I will be OK but it is nice that I have had so many responses and thank you for yours. I am now feeling more at ease. xxx
Yeah I have been told Ted socks for 6 weeks. My parter will be here to look after me and I have been given a grabber, long shoe horn and a raised toilet seat .... so should be OK. I also have a walk in shower which will be good as wouldnt be able to bathe. Hope you continue with your recovery speedily xxx
ahh yes bliss to get a shower once dressing was off. that was my only problem, aquacel kept leaking, so had like a giant fabric plaster on for a couple weeks. prob cause i had dissolvables not staples.
Hello Nadine, my surgeon does not believe in the socks and apparantly he has never had a patient with a clot. I was given clot busting type injections in the tummy for the 4 days in hospital and then on a small dose of asprin for 4 weeks. All surgeons have their own little quirks. I was the only patient in my ward without socks, all the others had a different surgeon. WISH I COULD SLEEP!!!!!
wha!!! 4 i had 28 to give myself!!! :O only 2 left now :DD As for sleep ,not been right since second night home, stopped using morphine sulphate... lol
Nadine the other thing I had was a wound drain but again the only patient with one, think my surgeon was quirky but top class. My dressing had to reamin on for a full 14 days, no staples just one continuous stitch
