I am 5 weeks post Op and still on a whole lot of medication painkillers.
Am I the only one who still needs so many.
Gapapentin 900 mg p/d
Cocodamol 30/500 mg x 8 p/d
Naproxen 1000 mg p/d
Amitryptiline 20 mg at night
Oxycodine 10 mg when needed.
Cut down on Tuesday to
Gapapentin 600 mg p/d
Cocodamol 30/500 mg x 6 p/d
Naproxen 500 mg p/d
Amitryptiline 10 mg at night
Oxycodine 10 mg when needed.
Hope I can reduce all these over time.

the more active you become the less pain relief you will need. i am four and a half months now but still need to take two parecetomol at night. I reduced the amatryptilinr graduallyto two and a half mil for a week and now no longer take them that was only two weeks ago. your body will let you know when you no longer need pain relief. i wish you well
Unless there was a particular issue with your surgery I would have to say that this is an extraordinary amount of pain medication!
I had my hip replacement over twenty years ago and had minimal pain control for only the five days I was in hospital and that was it. the revision last year was similar at 77. I do rather wonder why the high level of pain medication. are there any special reason why you have
Apologies for the strange ending but recently I find that replying here is very flaky. Is there a particular reason for the high level of pain medication?
Best wishes, Richard
I began this journey NOT wanting to take opiates. I was pleasantly surprised that I only needed the Oxys on Day One and Day Two post op. However, I DO take INDOMETHACIN which is a NSAID and Extra Strength Tylenol three times a day. I use a lot of ice packs throughout the day, but my pain has remained manageable so far, I would say I’m at a 3 to 4 on the pain scale throughout the day. Everyone is different, so I would follow advice of your nurse. Try taking less and just see how you feel.?
I had a hip fracture which they found last March 2017. They then put metal work in to stablelise it , But the fracture never healed and they hat to do a sort of emergency THR as the metal work broke off the screws etc. So I have been in pain since last year March which got worse and worse nearer this OP.
They had to try to get the metal work out and also the screws out of my bone which most of it they could get out. So it was not a normal forward OP.

Hi Jennifer,
thats exactly what I am trying to do. It probably will take a while but after being on most of them for 18 months I will give my self some time to come of all of them.
Petra
hi Steve,
i got that in the Cocodamol.
Thanks
Petra
That us a lot of drugs to be taking. I was offered Tramadol and Tylenol/paracetamol in hospital. I never took the Tramadol and stopped taking anything within the week. I think I was probably lucky. What sort of pain are you getting? I assume the gabapentin and amitryptiline are not for the pain.
Wow Bhappy, that is a lot of drugs to be taking, you really must be very happy ha ha. The amitriptyline is a very old anti depressant which is now the go to drug as a muscle relaxant instead of valium (diazepam). I was very lucky and did not have any pain after hip op.
Do you have an exercise bike as exercise really does control pain and makes it much more manageable. Good luck with coming off these drugs.
Hi,
Gabapentin and Amitryptiline are for neeve pain.
but that has settled down now.
But once you are on them for a long time you need to come of them graduly.
i still got groin, lower back pain and pain from the hip to the knee.
Its quite a bit down to the weather. especially when its damp.
Petra
thank you Jen.
I don’t have a bike. but I am starting physiotherapy at the hospital next week.
i do my normal exercise a few times a day and I go walking outside when its try.
try to walk a lot in the house and also do some housework etc.
I am sure the pain will go with time and so will my medication, as they don’t seem to do much really. I suppose I am just used to him.
I also got severe Insomnia which does not help.
Petra
i am four weeks postop
i take paracetamol once or twice a day mostly at night
i have pain at night mostly with some radiating nerve pain and have some celebrex which is an antinflammatory if it is really bad i will take a tramadol in the night. you do need to strengthen your hip muscles which should reduce your pain. our work at present is rehabilitation. You are on a lot of medication the order to eliminate them would be opiates first eg oxynorm, then i would change codcomol for regular paracetamol . talk to your doctor about the rest and good luck. Each week should see us more comfortable
Thank you Bridget.
the oxycodine o hardly take. they are only if it goes mental with the pain.
but I started now Tuesday to reduce quite a fee tablets and will carry on decreasing them every week.
i am sure I’ll be ok.
its just because I was so long on them.
And my exercises also help. so hopefully next year I won’t hardly take any pain killers and also maybe don’t have to walk without crutches.
i’ve been walking without crutshes in the house a few days after I came home from hospital.
i am just very impatient.lol
Petra
I am 4 weeks post op today !
Taking 1 30/500 co codamol and paracetemol 3-4 times a day
Also 2 200mg slow release ibuprofen at night if had achy day
Desperate to get off opiates as they make going to toilet so difficult
Also noting need for pain meds reducing and planning to drop to non prescriptionco codamol next week.
Do you think you might be doing too much if you need all those pain meds?

Hi Cathrine,
really don’t think I am doing to much, maybe very occasionally.
But I have been on all of these painkiller for a long time. so they probably don’t even work that well anymore.
Petra
Wondering then what happens if you reduce. Are you still in a lot of pain despite meds?
It is my understanding that our body do get accustomed to opiate meds needing more to get same effect.
If your still in pain maybe you need to get that checked out but if ok maybe do a bit more moving and walking as too much resting can cause more pain too.
Sending you healing hugs Petra
