ust curious what yur experiences were after your fist week at home.
How often did you get up to walk during the day and for how long.
I'm afraid my chair in the family room won't do. It's a rocker recliner. Not sure if i will be able to get out of. I'll have a walker to walk with when i ge home.
I have a electric temperaputic bed that is so comfy. Raises my head up and knees up and down. I have a feeling it's going to be my four walls during recovery with the bed.
How long was it before you could stand to wash your hair outside of the shower?
Any other info welcome. Next week is my surgery. Just trying to be prepared for what's to come.
i was walking with crutches on my return home. I was in and out of hospital in less than 48 hours. The day after my release I woLkes outside for about 10 mins. The weather wasn't always suitable for outside walking but I walked up and down the hall for 10 mins then a few days later 15 mins until after about 10 /14 day I was walking for about 30 mins every day. Out with that I walked as much as possible. I refused to let people run after me!! By week 4 I reckon that I could have done without the crutches altogether but was com it's to trying to be a good patient and do as I was told. Some better weather days I could walk 2/3 miles. I was very lucky, all seemed quite manageable. Some days were more uncomfortable than others of course.
i went to bed only at night to sleep. During the day I sat in the chair. The issue will be the height of the chair but as long as you are sitting in such a way that your knees are lower than a right angle, my Physio said that was okay. Need to be comfortable! I do hope that helps. Good luck!
I was walking with sticks at home going up and down stairs quite comfortably. Had problems getting in and out of bed until I changed sides and got in with operated leg first. Walked around house almost every hour for about 10 minutes. Sleep disturbed due to sleeping on back and had to get up so still only sleeping couple of hours at a time. Wishing you well with your op.
i use my office chair with a pillow in it. Not the most comfy but the best for now. I also have a twin bed in the family room so I can be in it when I need to.
i am two weeks post op today and I have been up as much as possible every day since coming home.
You won't be able to bend over to wash your hair.....I wash mine in the shower. You can't bend over for awhile, that is one of the possible ways to dislocate your new hip. It isn't an easy recovery but well worth it. I have had no pain since my surgery, other than the muscle pain associated with exercising.
I'm 5 weeks post op on Tuesday I remember coming home with my determined head on to get myself back to normality ASAP.i disliked feeling usless my husband had to help with washing and wash my hair over the sink and believe me it was more hassle than it was worth. me being me just got stuck in cooking washing cleaning after a fashion it's hard you find new ways of doing things. by nature I'm not a sitting down person, so I was up doing the exercises I was shown walked around down stairs as much I was able baby steps is what it's about at 1st the trick is don't over do it know your limits listen to your body.good luck with your operation
Hi, I am three weeks post op. when first came home I made sure I didn't sit longer than hour and did excercises three or four times a day. I went out for walk everyday, slowly building up the distance. I would also just walk round the house. Last week I managed to wash my hair by myself over the bath, bending as little as possible. I lie down in bed every afternoon and do excercises and have a sleep. Still not sleeping brilliantly at night but no in any pain, I just think I didn't realise how much you actually move around normally! My recovery is going really well, pre op pain gone just gotta get muscles built up. Good luck with your surgery and recovery.
The only comment I would add is that I was told that my dressing is waterproof and I have been showering as normal since I returned home, so no need for the bending over the sink. I have made use of a variety of chairs just ensuring that they are stable and have something to lean on to lever yourslef in and out of.
Pre op they got me to measure my chair, my toilets etc so they would know exactly what height to hve the toilet seat at and if my chair was suitable.....it wasnt so they sent one out for 6 weeks. Straight back, arms and make sure you sit with your knees level with your bottom.
As for washing my hair......my shower is over the bath which i couldnt {or was told not to} climb into until I had my visit with the consultant at 6 weeks.
So, I went to the hairdresser, I used a dry shampoo, I used a shampoo that I got on line which you squirt onto your head....dont need to bend over and wet it, then lather it, and then towel it off.
Similar to a dry shampoo except they leave your hair chalky and this left it quite shiney
Si It was a mixture of those 3 things that I used for 6 weeks, thank goodness that my hair is short
I would like to recommend putting something under your chair legs to raise it up.I put bricks on my love seat to raise it up. What a difference fours that make.
However your bed won't be that helpful because you have to lay flat on your backfor six weeks. You might consider practice now.also which side of the bed do u enter will be depends to which hip is the operation.
Getting up is difficult because of the pain ad week lowering yourself to sit is painful.do it slowly.you'll need a riser on the loo.
Any time your bum is lower than your knees is a no no.because some types of surgeries can dislocate.best of luck to you
Each of us are different, but I was using a walker and bearing weight the first day out. I was helped to the shower and there sat on a bench, was able to wash myself to some degree, second day sat on the bench along and bathed myself, they helped me back to bed. I was not at all confined to bed, either sat in a chair or in the bed with the triangle cushion in between my legs. Slept well on my back. Was very bruised and swollen the first two weeks, which is now resolved after the first month. I used a walker the first week and felt fine with a cane afterwards. Third week got permission to swim and drive, again, I live in Costa Rica, so different restrictions. I have a recliner sofa and was ok in that, used pillows to raise me up in a chair and to sit at the computer. 4 weeks out walking just fine, regaining the energy, a few aches here and there, but nothing like before. So do not expect to be stuck in the bed, that was NOT my experience at all. Get tired at times, but know to rest or go to bed earlier that night. Nice naps in the afternoon. Hope that helps and best of luck with your recovery. You will do fine!! blessings and hugs to you, Jody
My hair is long, long enough to sit on so i will keep it braided. I have a walk-in shower /tub. it has a seat in it. I also have a portable loo for next to the bed at night. Also a riser for the loo in the bathroom. I decided to put a pillow on my wheelchair so i can sit in the livingroom during the day.
I have been sleeping on my back for the last 4 years, so that won't be an issue. But laying flat will. I'll just have to put a pillow under my left knee to sleep until i get my left hip replaced. The right one is first.
Thank you all for your comments.
My house is small so i'll be walking in circles inside lol. Thank goodness spring is on it's way and the weather will be nice to walk outside soon.
I appreciate your well wishes My pre-op classes are today. Thank you for the tip on measuring the length of my chair, loo and bed .
