Ive suffered with chronic pain in groin area for over 2years now after a few tests and Mri exam my specialist Dr Chawla told me theres no cure for Neuropathy besides help with medication and pain clinic. None of the painkillers have worked, bad time with side affects! I recently had Accuputure with Gp only for the pain to spread all over body.
I have had no help and as single parent to 2 children this puts a strain on my depression. I don't want this to take over my life. Whats out there to help because im getting no where with the Nhs?
I don't want to rely on just painkillers there has got to be more out there!
Is there anyone that has tried something that worked even for a little while?
I had injections in the groin inflammation and local anaesthetic, that work for awhile but nhs won't give me any more!! Does anyone know if i have rights to appeal?
Finding the right meds can take time, what have they tried you on? Have they put you on pregabalin or gabapentin? They are good for neuropathic pain. There are also NSAID's and Opioids as possibilities... and if you are me? A mix of all three. There are also some antidepressants that can help with pain which might be worth considering.
As for the side effects, sometimes you need to give it a couple of months to see if things settle down.
Also, have they tried therapy? Particularly CBT? That can help change the way you cope with pain.
Also it is worth noting that pain can make depression worse... but the depression can also make the pain worse so you end up in a vicious cycle. So it might be worth increasing (or changing) your antidepressants to see if that helps.
The pain clinic is a good idea as chronic pain is what they deal with, they know all the tricks in the book that may help and will stick with you until your pain is under control.
I was on amitriptyline i ended up in hospital for 3wks, then naproxen i was sick for 3 months im skin n bones now also damage my stomach so i can't take ibuprofen with being sick for days! Then i went on gabapentin and within 2wks i could of hurt my family and myself!! I went crazy.
I will go pain clinic but at the moment im still clueless to what the future holds. Im 34 with to young children. Is there anything out there that cant help besides medication? Has anyone got better after trying new remedies?
Hi, I just found, by complete accident that ginger, the confectionary one, I took, has had a marked effect for me. Maybe not so much for the pain itself, but for the discomfort from being tingly and numb. It does have an effect on the pain in as much as the panadol I take works better, I can't take nsaids. I found this out 4 days ago by eating half a pack, then the other half next day. I had nothing in mind other than pigging out on it. I got the nerve damage 3 years ago when shingles went into my spine and damaged the covering of the no5 nerve in my left leg and foot. Over this time I have gone from total foot drop and paralysis to 4.5 out of 5 recovery in movement. I do still have the other discomforts. Neuro surgeon said recovery was very unlikely to happen, guess who was super lucky?
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave. It is most commonly used to treat anxiety and depression, but can be useful for other mental and physical health problems.
There is one called Beating the Blues that you can do online.
You can access Beating the Blues through a referral from your GP or another healthcare professional. You will then call your Beating the Blues Centre to book your first session.
For the first session you will watch an introductory video that gives you background on the course and tells you more about anxiety and depression. At your next visit you will be able to begin your sessions.
Thank you for explaining that but i made alot of life changes, mainly because i had no choice but besides the pain and not being able to get about with my daughter's im very happy and content.
I don't stress about silly stuff like i used to yet pain still gets so bad every 2-3 weeks im still laid up up to 2 months if im sick can last longer to get my strength back.
Im willing to give anything ago i will mention this to my gp.
Hi ,I know it seems crazy but for me exercise and activity are my allies . I think because they release endorphins and make me feel normal lol. I also try to eat healthy and get my water quota. I take pain meds but honestly don't feel they do much. Trying to stay positive really helps but yes can be easier said than done. I do feel accepting rather than fighting our pain is most beneficial, don't let it rule us,but accept we will have pain no matter what and then get on being as happy and participating in life as fully as possible. Remembering we will have off days and its ok to scream ,to be cross with it,but then to cuddle ourselves be nice to ourselves and get stuck into what makes us smile .
