Whats the highest dose anyone takes levothyroxine

The reason im asking this is that I take Lithium and also now 150mg of levothyroxine but im still getting symptoms. All the classics fatigue, massive bloating everywhere, emotional side of it and dry handas, burning feet the works.Am absolutely cheesed off. Have been ref to endocrinologist but feel as though GP doesnt listen.I feel ok with a levo raise for about 3 wks and then

Hi Michelle,I have secondary hypothyroidism,as my pituitary gland no longer makes my thyroid work, and I'm on 200mcg of Levothyroxine.I was recently tried on 250mcg,because of experiencing symptoms still, but the higher dose made things worse, and blood results showed that it took me over the 'normal' range.Gill

Hi Michelle, 225mcg in winter, 175mcg in summer. However this dropped to 175-200mcg in winter and 150mcg in summer after I realised I needed to take thyroxine an hour before breakfast and avoid iron and calcium meds within 4 hours.

You need to request the following tests:

feritin, folate, b12, vit d tsh,t4 t3 ft4 ft3 rt3.  Your endo should do these insist on them they will give a fuller picture of you condition, it may be that levo is not for you sounds like poss absorbtion issue and hasimotos which is what i have especially the 3 wk thing i had that for 2 years before it finally went away.

Make sure you take on an empty stomach. and do not take vits within 4 hours of it.

What are you blood test results post them up with the reference ranges.  It will be easier to comment on them.

i dont know tbh had nothing explained to me by gp.I take lithium for bp and this is secondasy but seems to be the thing making me ill. My TSH on 100mg is 1.7?? does that make sense. Gp said T3 isnr checked.

Hi Michelle 1.7 is not too bad for tsh, but TSH alone does not reflect the level of active hormone in the body. I would ask the gp for the other tests i mentioned if it is not thyroid then you really need to rule out dificiencies. if not deficient then ask for a referral to an endo.  I asked every time i went to the gp until I got one.  It did help me as well.

Also go to the thyroid uk website and print off the symptoms list tick the relevant boxes take it back to the gp with you and ask him to discuss further testing or endo appointment.

Yes they do tend to say that a good endo will test or if necessary get the test done yourself.  Look at thyroid uk site for alternative testing.  But try an endo first.

Good Luck
