Wheezy

Hi all today I am really wheezy and short of breath I wheeze every time I breath in it feels like it's been building up for a couple of days I also need to keep coughing and quite phlegmy is this a anxiety symptom anyone has had before.also is it possible to get your old life back I've been ill everyday for 16 months can't tolerate meds and cbt and councilling not doing much I seem to be getting worse xx

Hi Mango! I have been suffering with multiple symptoms everyday for two months now. I've been to the ER numerous times (to the point a dr made the comment I've been living there) and my GP like once a week at least!! They have done several tests on my heart, lungs, thyroid, head, chest, and blood work all good.

anyways, I too have had this exact same thing. I'll feel like I'm not getting breathe, will feel wheezy and will feel like I have to cough a lot, sometimes with nothing coming up and sometimes phlem. I've been reassured that they've checked my lungs and even CT'd them and they just listened to them again yesterday and said they sound good. So, it boils down to yet another thing my anxiety is causing.

i have usually at least one to two symptoms a day but it has very very slowly been getting better and I am slowly getting myself more comfortable with these symptoms and "dealing with them" the best I can. I'll go for walks a lot!! Lol My dovecote has me on Citalopram (Celexa) which as of Thurs will be 3 weeks on the full pill (20mg) daily. He tried Zoloft but it made me sooo nauseous I quit after two days. This time I did half a pill for a week and a half and then started the full pill. I think it's helping as like I said things are somewhat easing some. I'm also on Propanolol 10mg 2x daily for palpitations (my heart racing) and Ativan .5mg (which ill cut in half at times) for when it gets real bad. I'm proud to say I've gone from having to take two (halves) a day to one at night to sleep.

Im also getting into therapy for CBT and all. Please keep me updated as its nice to talk to someone having some same symptoms!! What are other ones you have??

You can message me also anytime!! I know how hard it is....it's the hardest thing I've ever faced!! Hang in there! Having someone going thru the same helps to talk more than you'd think...so please keep in touch (for both of us lol) Stay strong, we'll get thru this!!

Hi Mango, Was wondering if maybe it's some type of allergy - food, medication, environment.

hi mango6, if you have an audible wheeze, i would suggest you see your gp, could be a chest infection.  i too feel like i cant breath when i am anxious its one of my first symptoms, i then try to control my breathing, which of course makes it worse.  its really not pleasant, i would also suggest keeping well hydrated.  take care xx

have you been checked out for hayfever or asthma?

richard

Hi went to docs Tuesday who said I had chest infection and put me on antibiotics on we'd I got all itchy, nose eyes face chesty cough and still wheezing and short breathe spoke to my doc who took me off the anti bys and said it sounded more like hayfever so on antihistamine now I had a spirometry in cot which was fine so not asthma I've never had hayfever before feel terrible xx

Hi,

I have been looking to speak to someone who had had breathing issues when anxious. I am going through a really bad time with it. I have suffered with anxiety for years up and down, iv had meds and cbt. But i have just recently again had a few bouts of anxiety and now i feel like i im controlling by breathing when i know i dont need to. I feel like im running out of breath so it makes me feel the need to take a big breath and cough, but sometimes its like i cant get enough air in so it makes me panic. Its awful. Then it can make me dizzy because iv taken in too much air. Horrible cycle.

Id love to know how you cope when this happens to you. Im really on the edge with it now, its getting to the point of ruining my daily life and how i live.

Any advice or just a reply would be great.

Thanks in advance

Zoe.

Hi zoe, if you are wheezy i woul think you have a physical thing going on with your chest which you probs do need to see your gp about again, but i also think you tring to control your breathing will make it worse.  Its hard when you become aware of your breathing and try to change the normal cycle of it. You end up flooding the body with carbon dioxide and then you get the symtops assosiated with it, which makes you feel like you cant breath visious circle.  i honestly think the best way is distracion do something you can get engrossed it and you do forget about your breathing.  when im like this i try to cough and cough and cough and clear my throat all time when i dont need to do it and i think by doing this i give myself brochospasms.  Try not to be too aware of ya breathing, and if you do start to panic put your hand on the bottom of your stomach and when you breath out push your stomach into your hand it takes a bit of geting use to but it fiils the whole of your lungs with air, even the bits at the bottom which we dont really use it quite a nice feeling and it rid of all the satle air in ya lungs.  keep fighting and let me know how you get on. xx
