Hello new to this site & on day 9 post op FHR & Im 48. I think im doing really well & came out of hospital 38 hours after surgery . I wasnt given any advise really as I wasnt in for very long, I have removed the dressing myself from my wond & its very clean also very neat & tidy which im pleased with & the stiches are disolvable ....I would love a bath , do you think im pushing it a bit ?
Hello, I can't believe you would be sent home without equipment I.e. toilet seat, grabber, exercises, precautions etc....you are not to bend cross legs and especially not get into a tub for a good while, let alone take a shower until they tell you...you should contact either hospitsl, your surgeon or family doctor for guidance as only tthey know you health history, whereas we here can only give you the advice we were given, which at times have been different, so best to get it from the people that know you best...good luck on your recovery
Hi , I was told not to climb in bath for. 3 months as breaking the 90 degree rule . C
i am 9 weeks this Thursday and still wouldn't be able to get in and out .
You may be feeling great but don't do too much too soon .
Inwatched a video of THR on you tube last week and it really shows what we went thro .
good luck
Hi Patricia ....sorry I was given that eqipment at my pre - op , although I only need the walking sticks & the toilet riser .....I think perhaps it prob is a bit soon but just the thought of being pain free in a hot bath .....how lovely !
Hi Mary
Yes perhaps I am being a bit optimistic ....Oh I cant watch those videos , I know its all over with now but ew no not for me :-) Im still in quite a bit of pain & not sleeping & the thought of a lovely hot bath is so appealing !
Hi Sylvia,
Great news you are out and going well. Advice given to me as am now 19 days post op was no bath for at least 2 months minimum due to the 90degree ruling so only a good wash or shower being the orders of the day. My dressing was finally taken off 8 days after my op along with 26 staples removed.
I am 53 feeling 93 but getting there nice and slowly. Very best wishes and a successful recovery to you.
the district nurse came once a week for 3 weeks to change my dressing and each time as she left she said keep it dry, keep it dry dry dry dry dry!!!!! only once stitches or staples are out can you even contemplate a shower and no way climbing in and out of a bath - patience is the order of the day!
Hi Kevin .....Yes I think I may just have to wait a bit longer although I have had showers everyday when someone is in the house with me. I too am feeling very old & very bored I cant stand this daytime TV thing & really dont know what I am going to do with myself.....the days & nights are so very long arent they when your clock watching all the time! I havent had advise on the dressing so being the very nosey person that I am I wanted to have a look at my scar , now im not sure if ok to shower without having the waterproof dressing on ? Oh dear silly little things seem to big when your tired dont they !
All the very best to you too & keep smiling
Hi Valarie, I was told I could shower in the hospital & I had a waterproof dressing on , I have no appointments with any nurses or drs & just told I will be sent a letter for a six week check up with the consulatant ? I did think that perhaps I would have had something as I do also live alone , with very good family & friends around I might add. I think im just being very inpatient & the lack of sleep is maybe making a bit daft in thinking that I could even get in the bath let alone get out !
Thank you for all your wise words
Sylve
Hi Sylvia
I had dissolvable stitches and glue (!) and I was in hospital a bit longer than you (I'm 64) but we were allowed to have a shower before we went home and had a waterproof dressing. I had to go to my local doctors surgery to have my wound checked at about 8 days post op and the nurse removed the dressing cleaned the wound and said all was fine but not to put shower gel etc over the wound area for a couple of weeks just let water trickle over it.
I love baths and I miss them too but I was told to wait for another month at my post op check up last week.
Sounds like you are doing well though in spite of Daytime TV !

Hi Sylvia. I was the same as you - sent home with a water proof dressing and told showering was fine and it was. House full of teenagers and my partner so lots of help at hand (doesn't stop the teenagers form rolling their eyes and sighing if I ask them to do anything though
Would die for a bath but waiting to see the consultant in 2 weeks 4days - not that I'm counting. Good book, glass of wine and lots of bubble BLISS!
Patience girl patience .
Hi, my sleep patterns are a disaster and like you the nights are long, although lucky for me I love cricket so am watching it live in the early hours..
Another thing that has surprised me is the waves of tiredness that hits me after my walks and exercises, and I'm not really pushing hard. Oh well, good excuse for time out with a brew. As for shower without the dressing advice given to me was just water, no soap or body washes/creams for about 2 weeks. Appears to have worked with me as scarring appears clean.
Day time TV ?, we be antique and house buyer experts by end of April
Yes will keep smiling, you do the same and try take it easy and pace yourself wih no rushing it. Things will go wrong so extending your recovery time. Best wishes
Hi Valerie
It just shows the diffeence in different areas. I had 2 showers while I was in hospital as they told me the dressing was waterproof. They told me to take the dressing off after 14 days and my stitches were dissolvable anyway. I didn't get a visit from a district nurse as there wasn't anything to do.
I did manage to get inot the shower (over the bath) with my daughters help by sitting on the cortner of the bath and lifting my legs over. there's no way i could have sat in a bath though, the angle would have been too sharp!
Be patient and store up candles and wine for your first bath - just not yet
Hi Mary ....ha ha yes I have the teenage rolling eyes ....although at 23 my daughters not a teenager & nsomehow she has turned into my mother & I am finding myself just nodding in agreement with everything she says & does and terrified of dont doing as i am told And yes I know you are all right & I need to be a good girl & listen to all this helpfull advise
Much appreciated
Funnily enough Sylvia the thing they are really helpful with is giving me my daily injection in the stomach. I think they see it as revenge for me making them eat sprouts for years
Hello...
So curious how advice differs so much hospital to hospital.
I had a district nurse at ten days removing my dressing and said fine to have a shower. That day..which was and is loverly.
Baths...they said wait 6 weeks which is what I plan to do!
I am putting lavender oil on the scar which is healing g nicely...A fiend suggested this and the hospital said fine

Hi. I think the bath is not wise as you could open up your wound which is new. However showering is fine. However make sure you don't slip that is one of the reasons why they want you to be careful . My hubby stands in the shower and helps me so I don't fall. He's a bit kack handed when washing my hair but bless him I feel much better each day.
I love this! My 32year old son flew over from the Middle East to be with me and views the disabled equipment with distaste. I have always been so mobile. However he has helped me dress and cooked for me and has sorted out all our computer problems! I feel (being a retired teacher) that we should teach kids at school about disability because whether it is temporary or permanent it needs patience and understanding.
Hi Hilary, Yes I did take note of everyones wise words & havent had a bath , but still continue to have showers everyday , I am now on day 14 after surgery & still uncomfortable at night but slowly improving . I think thats so very sweet of your hubby to wash your hair
Well I was on day 20 post op & I had a bath...all felt fine & I was careful my daughter helped & it was beautiful :-) I have had several more although I do wait until someone is in the house with me & its just the best feeling ive had since the op ! OOh I have also removed the 'Potty' as its been named in my house - aka the toilet riser and im feeling good ! Still numb aroung the scar & very tight but this seems to be normal, ive been to the supermarket with sticks but was able to shuffle around holding onto the trolley.
I can start to feel like im getting somewhere now , lets see what the dr's say next week when I see body for the 1st time since I left hospital !
Hope you all had a lovely Easter & for those of us in England - Im in Leeds you are enjoying the sunny weather x x
