When will the swelling go down?

My husband is 7 days post op from a hip replacement and still has swelling around the hip and top of his leg........is this normal?

This is perfectly normal.  In fact, it may become a bit more swollen  for a while.

Bruising is normal too.  We all heal at different speeds, my swelling was at it's worse about 2 weeks post op and it looked like a big saddle bag!  I am 5 weeks now and it's all gone.

It is a shame that nobody told you this before the op or before your husband left hospital!

Good luck and I wish your husband a speedy and easy recovery.

Thankyou x

Hi yes this is normal. I m 5 weeks post op and still have slight swelling. For first couple of weeks my thigh and knee were swollen. Good luck with recovery for your husband x

Yes, its normal.  I had swelling for a couple of weeks around the hip and swelling of my knee, calf and ankle.  Then I had brusing down my calf and round my knee, this disappeared too after a week or so.  Its all quite normal and will go away eventually.  Don't worry, it will be okay.  Best wishes to your husband.

Thankyou so much x

Hi,

I am 13 days post TLH and have swollen left knee, calf and top of left foot, but this is gradually reducing through my daily exercise, out slow walking and from time to time during the day when having a chilled out knapp raising my feet above heart level when flat on my back. All appear to be working at the moment.  Judging from other hippies I have a bit more time to go. All sounds normal and will slowly reduce.

Good luck and best wishes to you both.

The sweling for me got better by week three, now 5 weeks occasional ankle swelling, but everything else cleared up. I had gained 18 lbs following the surgery from the swelling and it was everywhere as you are mentioning, solid bruising, too. The weight went away once the swelling was gone. His body has accumulated the fluid to counteract the attack ( surgery) that has taken place, it is a normal process when a surgery that large traumatizes the area of the surgery and surrounding tissues. It will improve over time. Good luck as caretaker!

For me too my thigh was very swollen for a long time. Since I couldn't put on this lovely stocking the swelling went all the way to my toes.

I use ice on it and that helped with the pain and swelling. How'd this helps
