Who has had an IOL exchange

I had my second cataract operation in June and have some scar tissue covering my lens and can't see out of my left eye. Am waiting for an appointment. Can anyone advise about eyes watering and how to stop it. I have been taking Dexafree eye drops since I had my first eye done in February and am worried about the steroids as I am taking Prednisolone 2mg for PMR. (Polymyalga Rhumatica)

Your post is bit confusing

LE- In June you had cataract OP for left eye? You don’t see anything out of that eye because of scarring/PCO? What did Doc say? Did you not see anything after the OP?

RE- In Feb you had cataract OP done for right eye? Is that eye clear currently as a result of the OP? No PCO?

Steroid use can increase chance of Cataract but if both your natural lenses have already been removed by artificial ones then atleast the lenses won’t get cataract. Although might effect the development of PCO. How old are you?

PCO = Posterior capsule opacification = After Cataract. It is treated by tearing a hole in the capsule using a laser/YAG treatment

Some general stuff-

Search Google for video called-

Yag Capsulotomy- for “after cataract” lens capsule clouding

Search Google for article called-
PCO: What’s Wrong With Doing a YAG?
A lot of effort is being devoted to avoiding PCO, but some surgeons say a YAG isn’t that bad.

Who has had an IOL exchange

Why do you want to do IOL exchange?

The After Cataract/PCO is not on the artificial lens/IOL, it is on the eye’s natural bag/capsule that holds the natural or artificial lens.

Your natural lens, which had cataract has been removed, the artificail lens can’t get cataract. Only the bag holding it can get regrowth of cells that makes vision go bad again like before cataract.

In some cases the IOL can go opaque too for manufaturing or chemical reasons but I doubt a one month old IOL would do that.

Hello WH Yes I do confuse people lol I will try to explain below on your second query.

I am not sure at all as Eye Hospital doesn’t go in for explaining. The doctor said the scarring was very rare so I am worried about operation as I am 85 years old and found it very traumatic. You have enlightened me a lot. I did see to read after the second op in June and was pleased as it wasn’t as bad as the first op in February, uncomfortable wise, but it didn’t last long. Felt like big pieces blocking and moving about. Had to get a taxi and visit the A & E emergency as you can’t talk to them on the phone easily. Am wondering if the steroids in the drops should be stopped but they keep giving me more.

So did Doc say he wants to do IOL exchange or are you guessing that you might need to do IOL exchange?

I am not a Doc so not sure what is actually going on.

No he just said I will need to have operation or laser and I don’t want an operation the reason I am worried is because he said it was rare. Thanks for helping me understand. I had a learner do the op with supervision I think they should have asked me first.

Beryl68139 The surgery was that long ago - perhaps it is complications due to drops and healing or even cornea swelling? If the do tor you are currently seeing (assume on NHS) won’t explain anything is there someone else you can talk to or consult with? It is a bit soon to talk about IOL exchange or any operation unless you have a clear understanding of what’s wrong.

I did manage to see an Opthalmic doctor at the NHS Hospital I was originally destined to go yo which is nearer to me but they rang my from the City Eye Hospital which has a good reputation, he gave me a thorough exam and said there was some swelling but I was to carry on at the Eye Hospital as they had all my history. Im finding put about IOL excahnge to be ready to decide what to do.

If there is swelling likely the reason for blurry vision. Give your eye time to heal. Not thinking an exchange would help. Once drops are done and swelling down you may find vision is good.

I had double cataract surgery two weeks apart in March. Left eye was still cloudy with black floating bits so he performed YAG laser but its actually slightly worse. He now said i have a slight scar on the macular which could be removed with more YAG but we’ve agreed to wait 6 months first to see if it settles down on its own. Don’t be afraid of the YAG laser, it was done in his chair on both eyes, absolutely painless, no sensation at all, and all you do is blink when he clicks the button each time. Out in 10 minutes.

Thank you that is reassuring.
