Why am I still leaking?

I had to have surgery again cause another ortho surgeon from duke hospital put my hip in backwards. So my hip starting popping out 3 times a week. Well I sat at home for 4 weeks with a dislocated hip and I went to a hospital out of state near where I grew up and he said my cup was put in backwards. Well in supposed to be on doxy. For the rest of my life due to MRSA. I have not had it in a couple months. My staples were left in four weeks and I saw yellow stuff around a couple staples and skin had grown over them. It was bad when they pulled it out. And my hip smelt like I just drove bye a landfill. Now my hip is still leaking enough I have to change it everyday.. Why is this happening

this is a question that should be addressed by a medical professional.  Go to the ER or an urgent care factility.

Dear Patrick

This really terrible, I hope that you have everyone involved documented and all evidence recorded so as to be able to bring a case of gross professional negligence and compensation for what you are likely to suffer cost wise.

Get legal assistance lined up now.

Find an alternative and well regarded and experienced hip revision surgeon from a different hospital to take on your surgery.

We need to know the name of the surgeon for the safety of others.

Good luck and please keep us posted.

Cheers Richard

Hi, MRSA is nasty. Are you being monitored for bugs in yr wound. What antibiotics are you on? Gosh. I'm appalled. Just get this sorted for yr own well being and get some heads rolling.

Right now in in Rehab. I asked them to do a swab and put me back on Doxicycline and the haven't done it. Ii am on no antibiotics right now. They are treating me really bad here. Shoot they can't bring my meds on time they are 2 to 8 hrs late. I can't find a lawyer to help me. Should I ask on Twitter to see if I can find a lawyer

It was Dr. Syler at Duke orthopedics. I can't find a lawyer. I have my records. Thank you for responding

And dr. FREELES AT WILSON ORTHO. IN N.C

I have had a total of 64 surgeries

You need to get a swab done and a full antibiogram done to see if there is any infection, certainly sounds like it, and which antibiotics are appropriate. You may have MRSA and or other bacteria present. Up to date antibiotic resistance/sensitivity pattern is essential to enable appropriate treatment if required

Omg. I'm in NZ so no help. Hey, why not put yr story out there. There must be someone to help. Twitter? Why not.

Sounds absolutely crazy. You need to be somewhere decent.

Thanks for posting the surgeon's name. Getting better is obviously your top priority but you do need to keep a very comprehensive day and time record of your situation and treatment so that you gave as much evidence as might later be needed. Take whatever photos that might assist you in the future and make sure they are good resolution, sharp and well exposed.

Good luck, Richard

Patrick

What a terrible story. As the others have said you need professional advice both from a good surgeon and from a lawyer.

As I understand it you have puss seeping from your wound and it smells bad. My original THR became infected (but thankfully not with MRSA) after I had bowel surgery. My symptoms were that the scar area was red and the joint was sore. They x-rayed and took a sample. Both showed the infection. After they had taken the sample the incision leaked a lot of fluid until my revision surgery. All that sounds a bit similar to your problem. Though perhaps your infection had not got between the metal implant and your bone.

My treatment was to have a two stage revision.

1. They removed the old metalwork, cleaned out inside and put in a metal spacer covered in antibiotic bone cement.

Then I took antibiotics until blood tests showed the infection was gone.

2. They put in a new THR cutting away some of the damaged femur so using a longer stem.

I am now 12 months post stage 2. I feel great. My leg doesn't hurt and I am more or less back to normal.

However I was lucky to get treated in a specialised bone infection unit by a surgeon who specialises in this work.

If you are diagnosed with an infection in the bone (rather than in the wound) try and find a hospital that has a specialist in this field.

Best of luck

Mike
