I saw my surgeon today at 7 weeks post op, and he made me stand on one leg whilst holding his hand. He did this with both legs. I could tell the difference on my operated leg, but i was wondering what he was looking for? Can anybody answer this? Thanks from a newbie to this forum.
Maybe to see if you had any problems with the other leg as the replacement joint would wear quicker if problems with your other leg. I don't know, I'm guessing as my surgeon said if I still have problems with my other leg at 6 weeks hell put me on the list to have that done then.
hello sharon, I was asked to do the same with my consultant at the post-op meeting around the same timescale - its to check that u have good balance after the op, part of my hydrotherapy was to ensure I had good blance on the operated hip joint
Thanks for your quick reply, and if thats the case i failed miserably! i have not been offered any hydrotherapy or psyiotherapy as yet.
Thanks for your quick reply.
Just a guess... Non of my docs did that they wanted to watch me walk and check the walking gate.
Most hips done today are press fit and the bone grows into the new components to stabilize the hip . It could be he wanted to see how well the heeling in the leg was by standing on the leg. If u could not stand on the led at all at 7 weeks then it could be a issue. I'm sure it was painful as this surgery takes almost up to a year to fully heel including muscles, tendons and bone.
a 3 time THR.
HOPE
I was just thinking that balance was more what he was checking.
It's ok to ask the surgeon questions. It's interesting as well. Beware, next time he may ask you to take all your clothes off and jump in the river! You would surely ask why wouldn't you?
I am with you; I force myself to ask as many questions as possible in the 15 min you get with your surgeon. They like to tell you the why's and how's.
I think he was testing to see how strong your leg muscles were and also to see whether your hips were level and if you could stand without leaning to one side. If you were not balanced correctly he may have advised using a crutch for a few weeks longer to correct this.
Hi Deedee
I went to see my physio last week, 8 weeks after the op and it is basically to compare your operated side with your good side and check the balance of the two
I had already asked him a long list of questions that i had written down, by the time he did this i think he was a bit fed up of me and wanted out .
