Why does my other leg swell?

Hi there. Just looking for a bit of advice really. I'm 40 and had a r thr last aug.. Things have been so so this last few months. I was at a wedding yesterday and had a few dances but nothing too adventurous .. Thing is , when ever I do any kind of walking or anything my other leg ( the one that isn't replaced) swells from my foot to my knee. Has anyone else had this? I'm on dihydrocodine , paracetamol and indometacin ( anti inflamatory) one I've never heard of but last two they tried me on I got very swollen hands feet and legs .. Don't know if it's anything to do with them!!!!

Hi Wendy I had a r thp may just gone and yes my left foot up to my knee also swells , my doctor sent me to get scans on it twice and took bloods and they thought it was a clot and stuck needles in my belly but the bloods came back ok , then I went for my check up with hip specialist and he said I e got oa of the spine and that's what's causing the swelling , hope this helps , am 44 years old and going to have my other hip done next year xx

So it's a year already since your replacement right? Sounds like inflammation and the pharma drug for inflammation, I don't know about them. I'm so into alternative supplements and for the most part avoid the drugs....so many drugs end up causing side effects...

I had some ankle fluid about a year or so into my replacement at age 72, and upped the grape seed extract which I'm on for 19 yrs soon...it works on our total body circulation and keeps the blood clean and thin.

I don't know if you can get grape seed ex or even pycnogenol in your country, I'm in the U.S. and we use a LOT of supplements here....drugs have just too many side effects.....pycnogenol is actually from France and came to the U.S. in about 1994, and grape seed ex soon after.

If you take a blood thinner prescription drug, then you can't take both. I feel rather sad that so many take so many drugs and still have so many issues.

And I find it amazing how many replacements are done at such young ages that I read about on this forum....I know, none of my business, but can't help the wondering of this surgery on so many young folks....

Here in the U.S. it's always been a surgery on old arthritic people and that is what makes me wonder so much....

Anyway, I've probably rambled too much, but know the two above I mention help eliminate/reduce fluid build up. take care.

I don't trust many MD's after enough years on this earth. I deal with OA all over my body including spine and I have no swelling and fluids...

Consider the supplements I mentioned to Wendy if you can get them in your country.....

Hi 3joy.. Thought I would answer your wonder as to why I got my hip replacement at 39. I have osteo arthritis in my hips and have done since about 10 years ago . Think originally it was caused my my ball being to small for the socket and with that over the years I ended up with a labrial tear. The surgeon said this would keep happening . I ended up with bone knocking off bone . I said to the surgeon that I'd rather get it replaced now instead of a labrial tear getting fixed all the time and recovery Oslo being long. I wanted to be able to have a quality of life now while the kids were young and I was working as a nurse. I wasn't ready to retire yet... Hope this helps as to why I got my replacement so young.. I'm sure the surgeon doesn't do it unless he or she thinks it is the best option.. I just didn't want to be left behind on the activity front when it could be made a lot better by having the hip replaced xxxxx

Indomethacin is a strong anti-inflammatory and, like most of them, does put a strain on the kidneys. If you've been on it for a while I would talk to your GP about a kidney function test. Have you tried TENS for pain control, it doesn't work for everyone but if it does, and it did for me, you might be able to cut down on the meds.

Good luck

Hi Joy, sorry for butting in but grape seed extract and pycnogenol are both available in UK, that well known health food store beginning with H and B stock them, or available online from various places. Agree with you that pharma products can have unwanted side effects, but I believe the herbal remedies can as well, so would be cautious using them - I mean introduce one at a time and wait and see, not don't use!

jean, I would try to work with alternatives any day before resorting to the hard core drugs...I was burned with a pharma drug and ended up in ER due to inflammatory drug, so I'm so paranoid about the drugs ad tons of side effects possible.... Often the drugs are worse than the original issue.,..we live and hopefully learn...MOST of my friends steer clear of drugs as much as possible....

True some herbals could cause some issues but in the 25some yrs of taking alternatives I've never had issues...I read and study up on them and go slowly and talk to many in the same mindset as me.

The only issue one could have with grape seed ex or pycnogenol is if they took a drug blood thinner....then don't take both...

These antioxidants keep our blood clean and thinned out....I had to get off grape seed ex before my replacement so my blood would clot and then a couple days later right back on to keep my blood from clotting. My surgeon had me on aspirin therapy for a few weeks after surgery to keep blood thinned...

At a health lecture in 1995, we were told Pycnogenol could prevent cancer....that is why I jumped on it....and then all the other issues showed up....no more allergies and sinus issues for sure.... edema eliminated and no cancer ...knock wood.

Here in the U.S. many cancer research facilities use these antioxidants in their cancer research. My passion is to do as few drugs as possible, as I know too many with too much damage done to them.......joy

A very strong anti inflammatory drug put me in the ER back in the 80's....with a stomach ulcer. So I was burned and learned and learned and learned about the drug possible damage....I was naive back then but boy did I get smart...

I almost tried a new class anti inflammatory drug here in the U.S. and due to the high price, I could not buy it......I'M HAPPY that I could not afford it.

We don't have FREE health services in the U.S.

Some get relief with the Tens and I've tried it, I do get acupuncture once a week to help with the major OA in my body.....

Thank goodness I can take ibuprofen and try to keep it to a minimum and make sure I'm never without DGL which is a stomach lining protector supplement....

So far so good and I'm 76, and the hip replacement at 72 has not been a great miracle as I had hoped for.....true, no groin pain but so much other pain issues.....

I take other supplements which also help with pain reduction...

Joy, I do so agree with you, I have heard of so many people including some of my friends who have been made more ill by the drugs they are given. Ot there are side effects so they are given another chemical to address that issue, and then there is another side effect and so on, until the poor patient has a cocktail of chemicals to take, and ends up worse than the original disease. Though of course there are life saving drugs, and I wouldn't argue against them if there was no alternative.
