Why is the pain worst around my period?

I've only just been diagnosed with cysts on left and right ovary. Always had painful periods, don't know how long the cysts have been there, but my pain is generally worse around the time of the month...why is this? Is it related? Thanks x

I have the same kind of cysts as you -- as in, they are worse around the time of my period and particularly during the end of ovulation. I believe they are called Functional Cysts. (googling it will help explain but I'll give it a go...)

This is because of the type of cyst you might have. Certain cysts are the leftover from when your ovary released an egg. The follicle that the egg erupted from has filled with fluids and has turned from a follicle into a cyst. These cysts follow your cycle, getting worse around you period in terms of size and pain.

I believe they do shrink after your period and fade out but, come ovulation, your very likely to have the same process repeat itself -- the follicle releases an egg, the empty follicle fills with fluid, the follicle becomes a cyst. And the process starts again.

It sucks but it's just one of those things and it is most definitely related to your period/cycle.

If i was you i would ask your doctor to look into endometriosis this is what i have. It gets very bad when you period comes! you should google it.

Yes, I definitely agree. I didn't even think of endometriosis but my mum suffers badly with it too, especially during periods. smile

That's what one of the other docs I saw thought it was originally it was her that sent me for the scan, I might go back and see her instead of my regular doc who was convinced it was IBS, she would never have sent me for a scan so I'm glad I saw the other doc. Im hoping she would at least refer me to gyne whereas I think it's gonna be battles all the way with my regular doc.
