Will I be able to go daughters scan 11 days post op?

Hi all,

I am due to have my op on 27th Oct. my young daughter (7) is in remission from cancer and she has regular scans/consultations, she has one on the 7th November. My question is do u think I will be able to go? My hubby will drive and I will just need to get from the car to the X-ray room then clinic - will this be do-able 11 days post op?

I have never missed an appointment with her and these scans are always a big deal for us so I really need to be there if I can! What do you all think?

Thanks xx

Hello Jane, firstly good luck with your op on 27th. Personally I had to attend physio 6 days post op and then a trip to the hospital to have my dressing changed. Everyone is different and heals at different rates but I think as long as you follow all precautions you will be fine.  I understand that you absolutely would not want to miss your daughters scan and being there as a family is important for you all.  My very best wishes go to your daughter and you as parents, just take your time and I’m sure you will be fine.

Please keep us updated on your progress following your op and your daughters progress.

Big hugs xxxxx

Hi Jane, sorry to hear about your daughters cancer, i will pray she will remain in remission. It all depends how you heal, we are all different, I know I couldn't have gotten in and out of a car at 11 days post op, but others on here have been doing great by that time. All i will say if be careful, maybe put a plastic bag on seat to enable you to swivel easier or buy one of those swivel circular things, i had that and it helped. Try the day before to see how you feel. I had to be brought home by patient ambulance and I could not have got in and out of our car. Mine was right hip, hard getting in, easier getting out. Don't thin I got in my car till 4 weeks, when I had a physio appointment. Good luck xx

I agree that the OP should be able to make it if she is reasonably fit.

Cheers Richard

Others may be able to, I certainly couldn't have. But I had difficulty with pain medication. Also I had surgery in Thailand where I live. The doctors seem very cautious  here. I am 3 weeks post op  & will only be learning steps this week. You may get different & more positive advice from others. Best of luck. Maureen

Hi Jane , at 11 days I would have been able to get in and out of a car but would have found the getting round the hospital a problem, most hospitals have wheelchairs that you could use and volunteer helpers that could assist in getting you from the car park to the scan dept, give them a call and see if this is an option.

Good luck with both your Op and your daughters continued recovery. X

Hi sending best wishes to your family

I came home in our car 3 days post op it was difficult but the advice on a plastic bag to manoeuvre your self really helps. It will all depend on yourself and your body basically tells you how you are doing.

Good luck hope you make your daughters appointment

Hi I will pray for continued remmission for your daughter and a fast and painfree recovery for you, your obviously very young to be having a hip replaced so you will probably heal faster but one question I would ask is how far will you be traveling to your daughters scan.

PS pack yourself in the seat with a quilt or cusions to stop excess movement

Hi Alexandria, yes I'm only 39 so I am hoping my 'youth' lol will help me heal quickly. The hospital is only a 20 min drive so not too far away.

Thanks for your advice x

Hi Jane, I'm sorry you have so much on your plate at the moment, but I'm guessing you are young and fit, especially with a little one! I came home on day 3 and managed reasonably well in and out of the car ( I had looked at some you tube clips and had physio advice so was fairly confident I knew what I should do) I know they don't encourage car journeys at first, but in the event I had to go back to hospital on day 5, 6, and 9 for dressing changes, besides clip removal on day 12, and physio day 13!. As long as you take your time getting in and out, have an attentive helper (aka hubby), it's not too far and walk how physio instructs you will be fine. Also ask hubby to avoid the large bumps in the road and brake evenly if he can! I think you will be pleasantly shocked at how quickly you improve each day, so by day 11 you will be good.

That's an OK distance and so long as you are very careful getting in and out then shouldn't be a problem, remember the higher up in the seat the better, its raising the leg to get in and out that causes the problems, make seat high and back of seat down to create a laid back sitting position, tell hubby no fast islands, corners or stops

Hi Jane, I have had both sides done now at 57, and been there twice through recovery. It that is so sad to read your story this afternoon, and hope all goes well with the results from the scan.

You have to remember that your internal stitches will just have dissolved at 11 days and the scar will be a bit sore, I would really give it a miss as getting in and out of the car will be painful, the internal stitches take two weeks to dissolve, then the dressing comes off, and could be a risk factor with any sharp quick movements, and the walk in to the medical facility will be difficult with the crutches, I would keep in touch with a phone as once our daughter in in the machine, there is nothing you can do really except wait.

You may be able to do it, just take it steady.  See if you can get hold of a cushion for when you want to sit down to help you not break the 90 degree rule.  Get hold of a wheelchair if you can to help getting around if the hospital is large.

Hi Jane, so sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope that your op goes well. Haven’t really got much to add, you’ve had good advice about getting in and out of the car. We all heal differently, and I suppose you’ll just have to see how you are.

I was lucky with a v straight forward recovery.  I was v mobile on my crutches, and was walking easily. I wish you all the best, Judith

You should be able to go but might still be on heavy pain meds.  Most likely still on the walker.

Hi Jane,

I'd imagine you should be fine, and like others have said you can use a wheelchair at the hospital if you need too, I am 42 and had the op in June, at two weeks post op I was able to have short trips out ( about 2 hours) with a bit of walking involved.

I hope everything goes well for both you and your daughter.

Big hugs x

Hi Ian, I'm sorry but I don't think any parent who has attended every other scan would be able to sit it out. The main risk to Jane would be the car journey rather than the walking. Every hospital would have a wheelchair for use too
