Wondering

I have had two ankle fusion on my right ankle I’m still in the boot still can’t walk without a boot going to therapy is this normal???  It’s been three months since my second fusion and a year since my first please I need help

Hi Candice,  I don't know about "normal" but I know that everyone recovers at different rates.  I'm 9 weeks post ankle fusion but my surgeon says to still use crutches with the boot until I see him next which will be 13 weeks PO.  My Physio is doing a good job with getting the rest of the foot moving but I'm still not allowed full weight bearing.

I think that after 2 fusions the process might take longer anyway.  You don't say if you are in pain still or if the 2nd op was because the 1st didn't quite work but I understand the deep frustration of not having to use the boot and crutches after so long.

I hope you start getting some improvement soon and that it will all be worth it in the end.

Hi Candice, I hope you are feeling better today!

It is probably a good idea for you to see a doctor.

I was told to do whatever is comfortable, so if trying to walk with your boot is uncomfortable, your foot may not yet be ready for weight bearing.

I have been excited about getting my mobility back, but have come to the conclusion that my recovery takes time.

I try to live day by day and stay in the present.

I hope you are able to comfortably put weight on your injured foot soon! Also have a speedy recovery Candice!

Hi Candice,

I am about 10 weeks post op for 3 broken bones and displacement in my right ankle. I just got out of my boot and am walking in a athletic show with a lace up ankle brace. Everyone heals differently, has your surgeon or physical therapist given you a time line? I was in a cast for 6 weeks non weight bearing, then in the boot for 4 weeks, increasing weight each week.

Hang in there I know its frustrating but ankle healing is a slow, slow process. biggrin

I have a lace up brace I can’t get in it because my ankle never have went down from swollen

My foot is swollen too. I had too be fitted with a double wide Brooks athletic shoe to fit my fat foot and the brace inside! Are you comfortable putting your full weight on your ankle inside your boot?

Yes I can put weight on it just hurts

That could be why your doctor is keeping you in the boot. You probably just need a little more healing time.

Good luck you will be in a shoe in no time!

Hi, I had a triple fusion of the left foot and an ankle fusion on the right foot. In both cases I was non weight bearing for about 13 weeks. After that I could walk with crutches and a support boot.

Well it’s been a couple of years since the last fusion and I can say it was worth the pain and inconvenience. Before the fusions I was struggling at work, walking any distance was a no. Now walking fairly well nearly pain free but well worth the ops.

Just listen to the surgeon and don’t rush it.

Hope all goes well

Hi, I am 6 mths post 2nd fusion, the 1st was 9 years ago. I was in boot until about 3 mnths. Started rehab/physio 3 weeks ago. Still have pain in foot, needing crutch at times. Healing takes time. And it takes longer after each one. Be patient and kind to yourself.

Thank you because my doctor trying to say I need to be up and moving but I had two fusion less than a year a part
