Hi just wondering how long people were off work after their ops? I am a vet nurse so in a active job , standing , walking lifting for 10 hours a day , I am on light duties at the moment because I cannot do what I would normally due to pain.
The Dr has told me possible return to work after 6 weeks but the more I read on here the more I think it may be longer , what are people's experience with this? Money is a issue as I will only be paid for a couple of days then it will be sick pay from the government as I have had time off due to my hip and family bereavement already this year š
Hi,
Work hard on your exercises because that is key to regaining strength, which is what is needed to sustain you at work. It is tough when money is an issue, but six weeks, barring complications, is the standard for driving and working again.
Wishing you well!

Hi DAWN
Greetings....see you have 6 stars now..and me 4 stars!
Rachel has asked a good question and as you say 6 weeks seems the norm. But we all different in fitness and age etc. I was told pre op fitness was a good measure of likely hood to return at 6 weeks.
Finances are obviously an issue yes. Can you negotiate a middle light work schedule?
Gooduck

Hi rachael! Poor you! Not easy having to work and also in your job your on your feet a lot!I would go to your gp and talk to your consultant asap!I am a carer for my disabled hubby!and I have had his care package extended, much to the fury of social services! But I myself am still having problems! Good luck! Regards Amanda
I'm only 2 half weeks in but my surgeon said 8-12wks off work. I'm a
Midwife in Nhs so not gonna rush back til I'm absolutely sure I'm fit to
get myself into all the positions I can be in when assisting at births. I
know it's early days but can't even imagine being able to work just now! Like everyone says here we're all different and if you build your strength up steadily maybe ready before you think!
Hi,
I was told minimum of 6 weeks at least but then told be prepared for more time off as our own healing patterns and speed are different. I would suggest that if you have to go back ASAP, then with the nature of your job, make it clear to your employees that you will have to rest and do some jobs sitting down from time to time due to muscle fatigue you will likely feel post op plus after continuous exercises. Then when you do return do rest if any pain kicks in. Good luck and best wishes.
Hi racheael, I'm six weeks post op on monday, got consultation on wednesday when my current sick note runs out, like you only ssp for me as got tight employer. Desperately wish id managed to save up more before op but got 2 teenage boyz to feed n it aint easy to save ...esp when your boss is tight! Lol (maybe i need a new boss), anyway hip feels great just my kne now unstable i don't think joint gone just muscles but i am manual engineer and do not feel ready to go back with wobbly knee, they may not want me back if I'm not stable on my feet! Talk to your boss he has a duty of care to you ,when you at work. And should make reasonable adjustments !? I know it hard, my sympathies.
All the best jay
I have my op on Saturday.
I work in a children's hospital 13.5 hours a day. My surgeon has said 12 weeks minimum because of the nature of my job and long hours.
Hi Gaynor, very best wishes and good luck to you for your op on Saturday. All goes well for you and a speedy and as pain free recovery especially if you don't mind me saying the job that you do. Deserve so much thanks. Keep us all hippies up to date how u get on.
Thank you so much Kevin that means a lot. I love my job and have worked there for many years. I work on an oncology ward with stem cell transplant patients and their wonderful families ..A very rewarding job I can tell you ..
Will keep you updated on my progress. Feeling very anxious now as only 3 days to go

Thanks for the feedback everyone, nice to get some info on what to expect x
Was nervous myself so your not alone. Even though I had a lot of work and sport injuries requiring different treatment, still felt apprehensive about my hip replacement. But now further down the recovery road I don't regret he initial discomfort and really starting to feel the benefits ad return of quality of life. Be thinking of you.
hi rachael, i am a DT teacher in a secondary school and started back at work this week - 8 weeks after op. I have my crutch with me (more to hit the kids with than anything else) and find towards the end of the day I am actually leaning on it, interestingly enough yesterday I had my class from hell and my operated leg was really aching - not the joint but the muscles because they had made me so cross and stressed out, but today I had a full teaching day of all lovely kids and my leg feels absolutely fine !
Hi well done you on getting back to work! Teaching can't be easy these days! Don't over do things! Regards Amanda
