Working after surgery

I will have surgery in a few weeks for Bunion and hammer toe. How long did some ov you stay out of work. I am worried about this. I don't get get benefits and make minimal funds. Can't afford to be out to long. After a few weeks can you walk with a boot? Thanks for the advice.

Hi, I had a bunion removed seven weeks ago, I started walking in my own boots yesterday the first time without the protective boot, I am finding it difficult with the movement of the toe it just doesn't want to bend so making walking difficult. So far I will be having twelve weeks off work, but I'm on my feet the whole time when working. The norm just for the bunion removal can up to six months but I've been told some people are still suffering after a year.

Hi Franny

I am 6 weeks post surgery, having had scarf procedure bunionectomy on the large toe, hammer toe surgery and Weils procedure for a mortons neuroma.  It was just on one foot, no crutches but a heel weight-bearing surgical shoe (my magic boot).  I would say for the first two weeks I couldn't walk for more than five or ten minutes without pain.  Then for the next two weeks I was able to walk a little longer in between  having my foot raised and when I put my foot down it wasn't so much painful as having a sensation of blood-rushing and pins and needles.  All of this has gradually improved so that now for the last two weeks I have needed to have the self-discipline still to keep my foot up as much as possible.

I'm back at work on a phased return.  I have a desk job and am able to put my foot up on a stool and even on the desk, depending on what I'm doing!  But it's not the same as being able to raise it really high with pillows/cushions at home.  After about 4/5 hours I've had enough and go home.  I can do bits of work from home also.

Everyone has a different recovery rate, depending on what they've had done and their age.  You need to ask your doctor for advice.  But certainly see if there's something you can from home.

Good luck with the surgery!

Thanks for the info. Good luck.

HI, I had the same op on the 20th January and in a plaster cast thought I would go back after two weeks but no way, i have had no pain but all sorts of different feelings, swelling, and nerve twitching, i have been put off for 6-8 weeks although I think I will probably go back in a couple of weeks good luck, listen to your foot !!

Thank you.

also forgot to metion I have pins at the end of my toes which cannot be knocked as the plaster cast does not cover them only bandage

Hi I had bunion surgery and straightening of 2 other toes on 14th jan seen consultant today for stitches to be removed after 3 weeks of elevation was told to wear Velcro shoe for another 3 weeks walking with full wait on middle of foot as iv been heel walking for last 3 scary but feels ok my foot is very !! Swollen and still in lots of pain ! He said after another 3 weeks of elevating when needed and walking for short periods I should be able to go in to a large normal shoe gunna look at some fur lined crocs as they are wide he has suggested I have another 4 weeks off sick then return back on a faised return for a few weeks !!

Thank you.

Hi, I am 2 weeks post surgery and am going back to my office job tomorrow. Im in the glorious Velcro sandal. I will be able to elevate my foot as necessary.

Unlike quite a few people on here I was advised to do as much as I can and rest when my body needed it. I was encouraged to walk on the special shoe very soon after the op. I have been very lucky compared to a lot of the posts I have read as I have had no pain at all.

My post op appointment went well and my dressing was changed to a smaller one with a toe separator. I have had minimal swelling so far and manage to get about fine in the special shoe. I was xrayed as well and everything is progressing well.

I think you have to do what is best for you. You will know if you are ready to go back to work.

Kind regards

Sue
