Worried having left hip replaced

Iam 55 yr old male, having left hip replaced on Dec. 5 2014,  I had surgery on both hips when I was 10 years old to straighten out the feamar have hip displacia and ball is not formed very round.  When the surgery was done they put a plate and 4 screws in which are still there, so when the hip is replaced they will have to drill through these existing screws, surgeon says should be ok, says screws would be hard to remove. but worries me. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this?

No not hsd that done but im sute the consultant has done it before just have another word with him to put you at ease. They are so good at this type of surgery now . Try not to worry im sure it will be ok.

Shelby,

The best advise I can give you is to make sure you have a skilled surgeon. I am 8 wks post minimally invasive THR. I had no other issues but am thankful I took the time to find one of the best surgeons in the area. They are always coming up with new ways to do this surgery so just ask a lot of questions until you feel confident. After all, this doctor is getting paid to do a job.

Good Luck,

Hi Shelby,  I had a similar problem to yours but mine was congenital dislocation of the hips and I didn't have to have any surgery.  However, when I was 40 I had both my hips replaced and in September this year I had to have the right one done again.  The surgeon couldn't get one of the old screws out of the cup and it is still there (saw it on x-ray today!).  He said there is absolutely no need to worry about it being there, it can't do any harm and would have caused much more of a problem if he had kept trying to get it out.  So, I don't think you should worry about this, it just means you will have a bit extra metalwork in you.

I hope this helps.

Stella
