Worried my UTI has spread to kidneys

I have previously posted about my UTI and my 4 lots of antibiotics. Since last Sunday I started having a pain in my left side. It feels sore and swollen. I still have the lower back pain as well.

The doctor seems to think it could be because I am constipated. I am not so sure (I am constipated though)

On my 3rd urine sample they could not grow a culture (probably because of the antibiotics I have taken) how would they know if it has gone to my kidneys?

Did they check for internal cystitis I have had to go to a specialist for mine on the 27th I have to go to a urologist professional surgeon

No, haven't been checked for this. To be fair, I haven't had the burning or stinging with cystitis.

I am starting to panic and worry that they are even treating me for the right thing. I have all the symptoms that could fit with ovarian cancer. I know I am probably worrying over nothing but........

Hi Amanda,

If they take blood from you they should know if it had spread as your white blood cell count will be high.

I have suffered with pyelonephritis for the past 18 months and that is the exact pain I am in when I know it's spread to my kidneys. They could also check by doing an ultrasound to see if it has spread. If it is left untreated it can be very painful and i personally always end up hospitalised with it so if the pain gets worse or you can't shift it definitely speak to a doctor

No doctor has taken any blood from me. An ultrasound is being arranged to see if I have Ovarian Cysts. I seem to be better if I am standing. The pain in the abdomen and back is much worse sitting.

I am going to see how I am tomorrow as the Amoxicillin should have worked by now but maybe ring the out of hours surgery.

Stress doesn't help either did your urine come out positive

Just one of the Urine samples did. Said Nitrofurantoin should clear. I did have that for 3 days before being put on Keflex. Had that for a week and then Amoxicillin since Wednesday evening

I've had 7 antibiotics I did have a uti at first but the more antibiotics you take the more your ummune system shuts down if there's no infection they won't work

did you have a pain in lower abdomen with your UTI. I have got some codeine to take but it's not helping the constipation.

Just remembered that I had a CA125 last October and it came back OK.

What is "Internal Cystitis"?  Or do you mean "Interstitial Cystitis"?

Pain and/or pressure in the lower abdomen usually means a bladder infection.  When I have a UTI, the pain in my lower abdomen is centered over my bladder and feels like period cramps.

Hi Amanda...like you I have 3 lots of antibiotics and after the 3rd I still have symptoms of a UTI but only pain and fullness of the bladder. No stinging when I pee or anything. And I've had this on and off for about 2 months after the initial rounds of antibiotics. I was given a tablet to take x2 a day for bladder spasms which seemed to help but I find if my diet is not so good then the symptoms seem to come back again too. If I clean up my diet and eat heaps of fibre (Kiwi fruit seems to work well) and lay off fatty foods and garbage then I seem to get better. I also have IBS but am generally fit and we'll. It does get to me at times but I definitely find cleaning up my diet helps. Which makes me wonder if my bowels are pressing on my bladder and making things worse?!!

Constipation can cause bladder discomfort because the colon lies just behind the bladder.

I recommend taking a daily fiber supplement such as Metamucil.  Available over-the-counter in brand name or store brand (currently, I actually take the fiber capsules because it's difficult to find unflavored fiber powder that you mix with liquid and, having IC means the acidity of orange flavored fiber will, after a few days, begin to cause bladder pain and burning).

Makes sense then...sucky that it took me to come to this conclusion after a few months of going back to the doctor and them just giving me prescriptions when it could have possibly been prevented by a simple diet change?!!

One of the first things my doctor asked me (the first time he did a urine test that came back with no infection but symptoms of a UTI) was if I ever had constipation, to which I replied, "not really full-fledged but sluggish now and again even though I take fiber (what you actually eat works together with the extra fiber)".  That's when he told me what I've already posted about the colon.

I decided to go to the out of hours doctors last night. My urine sample that I took was still showing white blood cells. He was appalled that nearly three weeks down the line I am still getting no where. The amoxicillin is clearly not working. He advised me that because of the pain, I should go to A&E on Monday if no better. He said I could have gone last night if I felt I needed to. He couldn't believe that I am not having a test to see if I have kidney stones.

He has prescribed me Ciprofloxacin, I know there are some on here that have had really bad side effects. I haven't had side effects from any other drug prescribed so need to give this ago.

I am constipated and have been for a while, I know my bowel is attached to other parts of my body from adhesions. I go every day but the form has changed. I can pin point it, to when I gave up my seeded bread at lunch. I thought my diet was pretty good, I love vegetables and don't have potatoes. Stewed fruit every day with natural yoghurt, porridge for breakfast.

thanks for listening!

Cooked veggies don't give you the fiber of raw.  And potatoes are nearly the perfect food.  Baked them and eat the skin, too.  I agree with the seeded bread since I bake lots of nut breads during the holidays and they are great for getting you going.

Whole grain cereals such as Cheerios and Shredded Wheat (I buy the Frosted Mini Wheats) are good.  Raw apples along with the peel put the truth to "an apple a day keeps the doctor away".

However, I still advocate a daily fiber supplement.

Usually the urinalysis would indicate if it was the kidneys, and you would display sever flank pain and high fever.  I would request a pelvic ultra sound if you are conerned about your ovaries.  Cysts can be a cause of sharp pains as well, and they are quite common in women of child bearing years.  Sometimes after a UTI even though the bacteria is gone there can still be inflammation from the infection, sometimes the antibiotics can cause this.  Remember even though they kill off the bad bacteria they also kill off the good ones too, so probiotics are VERY important.   I feel I am an expert in this area as I have been dealing with all that since early spring, I am starting to see improvements.  To cover all my basis I had a complete pelvic, and kidney ultra sound to rule out any abnormailites.  I still get occasion dull pain, or sharp jabs, but since I have increased probiotics, cranberry, and drinking a lot more water and D-mannose, I have felt better than I did a month ago.  When ever you are unsure of something always get it checked out, it is worse to sit and worry, that will not help your body to heal either.

Been back to the GP today. Blood tests are being done to rule out anything nasty going on. I have to finish the antibiotics that I am on now and go back next Tuesday. Hopefully my ultrasound will be done soon.

If the bacteria has gone and nothing shows up from ultrasound then they will investigate my adhesions
