Yippeeee and a couple of questions

saw my consultant today 5 1/2 weeks post op and he has discharged me! my new hip should last 25 years (it might outlive me) my other hip is also looking better than before and i can keep my crutch until i want to. i can start driving and go back to teaching after the easter break - i def want to use the crutch in school  a great behaviour management tool! thing is they were running an hour late and the consultation took all of 5 mins so i forgot to ask some of my questions - so helpfull hippies - when can we stop using the raised toilet seat and when does the whole 90 degree thing stop being so vital??

Hi.congratulations, sounds like you're doing really well. I went for my last physio session yesterday & was told still to adhere to the 90 degree for at least 12 weeks. My consultant also recommends never again crossing legs or bring knees up to your chest. I'm happy to do anything that means I will stay pain free!

raised toilet seat is to be used whenever possible but I returned to work this week & had to use a normal loo. It's manageable with care and there is n way I am taking

Great news, congrats. Also, thanks for info about raised toilet seat, quite literally a pain the backside !!!!  Best wishes to you

That posted before i finished! No way I am taking toilet seat to work with me!

i went for my consultant appt yesterday & he wasn't there, just the ward Doctor! I didn't get to ask all the things I wanted to know but can get good advice on here anyway.

good luck with your continued recovery. I think it's still early days for both of us & best to be careful.

Dear Valerie, hip hip hooray for you and how well you are doing. I chuckled at the idea of your hip outliving you, I have thought the same. I know for myself and hopefully for many on this site that we are just grateful to have another chapter of life to live, one without pain and suffering, one where there is hope and a future. For myself, it was two years of horrid pain. People I know comment on my face and how different I look as before I was grimmacing with pain and was not sure I was going to survive day-to-day. So thank goodness, we have survived the surgery and are moving forward into a world of possibilities again. Congratulations and enjoy every moment!! Susan

surprisingly i think i can cope with not crossing legs because i havent done it so far  - can you imagine me walking round a large, challenging, secondary school carrying a toilet seat!  i think i will take in my grabber though lots of uses for that apart from picking up things from the floor....

Yes, forget the toilet seat, but the grabber is a must. I brought to the beach to pick up shells, very handy. Whoever invented that was a genius!!

After 6 weeks you should be okay without the raised toilet seat, but just be careful for a bit longer by keeping leg out straight in front of you when sitting down.  I was told I could bend at 7 weeks, but I was extra careful just in case for a couple more weeks.  I was told never to cross my legs or cross my ankles either.  I don't cross my legs anyway, got out of the habit some time ago, but I had to remember not to cross my ankles though.  All the best.

Good luck at school.

Great news and congratulations. I agree with others I used ordinary toilet seats from about 6 weeks when I went out, just take care I do still used the raised ones at home though and will continue to for the next couple of weeks. I was told I didn't have to worry about 90 deg rule when I saw my surgeon at 7 + weeks.

Enjoy the Easter holidays and best of luck with your return to work.

Hi, my consultant told me at 6 week check to pretty much return to normal. Haven't used raised loo seat since 4 weeks post op and as for 90degree rule he was happy fr that to go too but listen to your body (and your consultant as they are all different ). I am 7 weeks now as have been sitting on settee with legs to side. Never thought I would be able to do that again!  Well done on your recovery. Keep going x

totally agree x
