Zoloft (sertraline) Day three, 25mg

I'm afraid of this medicine. This is the first time ive ever had to take any medication daily. I don't like the reviews I've read on it and I don't want to become dependent on it or feel like I am out of control. So this is day 3 of me taking this medication and I want out. I'm taking this for anxiety and derealization feeling. But I don't feel anything yet. I feel like I'm not in control of myself, I do feel me not being as anxious as I normally am but I don't like the feeling of being on medication. I don't know what to do.. anyone else have any tips for me please?

I refuse to go on meds, i have been suffering from severe anxiety since January and my dr insist that i go on meds but i refuse for the exact same reasons you have mentioned. I started practicing meditarion, breathing exercises and yoga. I am also seeing a therapist and just recently started accupuncture. It is not an overnight change but it beats taking meds that can eventually make you feel worse. I also stopped drinking coffee and sugars. Oh and exercise, like i said, its not an overnight process but it works. I am ten times better than i was before. I have learned to control my panic attacks. Meds may take up to six weeks to work but i just dont trust them.

If you are expriencing any side effects then may I suggest that you talk to your dr about this. If the medication is making matters worse then the dr may change it or review the situation.

Derealisation is said to be part of anxiety and having experienced it for myself through taking a strong pain killer that suppressed the endorphinsI can fully empathise with you.

The feeling of derealisation liftd with me but it did take some time , I was advised to exercise and to avoid the painkillers that had caused the problemin the first place.

Try not to worry about these feelings as they will go but you need time.

TIPS that helped me  were as follows.

Having a structure to my day. This meant geting up at a certain time, getting something to eat and  drink to keep my strength up.

Distraction techniques such as reading, watching tv, music, doing simple crosswords , anything that can occupy your time even if thee activity is in very  short bursts. I found  this  gave me a sense of acheivement.

Take care you will get there.

I took them and they made my anxiety worse also had terrible side effects and lost weight on them when I'd had enough of them it was hard getting off the withdrawals a horrible so all I'd say is be careful doctors give these out so easily when I think councilling should be offered first.. eat better and excersise up your water intake may be simple things but will help heal your body better than a pill.. hope you feel better

I agree with you Heather.

Glad you got so many replies. Meds like this can make you feel worse before they actually help. Many people decide to stop or change as it's scary not knowing if it's worth going through these horrible side effects when you have no guarantee they will help , this makes our anxiety go mad, worrying if we are doing the right thing. Everyone is different, and different meds suit different people. They are there for a reason, and can help short term, can understand why some people don't use as they are not a cure but can help alongside self help etc. Discuss with your doc your concerns , may take you off as you have not been on long, or discuss other options only your doctor can advise you about medication. Lots of people here have similar experience to you and it's very reasuring to know you are not alone, also people here happy to share how they cope with anxiety❤️

Thanks! The only thing is I can't contact my doctor until after the weeken and I don't want to to take the Zoloft anymore so I'm not sure if I should just stop taking them and let my doctor know on Monday or keep taking them. I don't want to keep going since I've only ever taken 3 of them I feel like it wouldn't be that bad if I just stop taking them.

Have you ever tried natural supplements for anxiety? I think I would rather try those instead. And I've only taken 3 Zoloft pills so far and I want to stop but I don't want anything f bad to happen to me if I just stop taking them. I am unable to reach my doctor until Monday.

Thank you so much! Yes it is nice to talk to other people who have similar problems as me, makes me feel better about thw situation ☺️

Thank you!

It will get better just take a day at a time in beginning a thought I'd never feel half decent ever again and although some days I still struggle I am much better than where I've came from.. keep talking it helps I know sometimes we don't feel like it or maby that was just me I'd just loch myself away some days but now am making a point that I must leave my house at least once a day even if it's just walk around the block

If you really are uncomfortable about the tablets then definitely talk to your doctor I reduced mine myself while a was waiting on my doctor as she was on holiday and a was suffering to much to wait I would just lower my dose until I felt ok and then lower it again with you only being on them 3 days I'd say you'd be ok but I can't know for sure a was on them 9 weeks I got withdrawals

Hi daeq

I have taken magnesium and vitamin D3. It is okay to take magnesium according to my GP as long as you do not have kidney disease or poor kidney function.

Herbakl teas are said to be good in relaxation , camolilie, lavender teas. I have never tried them myself but you could always check it out online with one of the health shops.

I think that you do have to be careful with supplements because of ineractions with foods and drugs but a pharmacist can always advise on that one.

I doubtthat stopping zoloft after only taking three is going to be detrimental, again please ring a pharmacist up but seriously three tablets is nothing and should not be problematic.

Deep breathing is good for relaxation and it really does work. There are lots of references to this online. If the anxiety becomes overpowering then Iwould suggest calling a local hospital and ask to speak to the crisisline , they can guide you through breathing techniques and sometimes it is better to talkto someone who can pick up the nuances and say the right things to help make you feel better.

I think that you are worrying unnecessarily about stopping  the zoloft because you have only taken it for a very short space of time.

However just to reinforce that I would suggest ringing a pharmacist , quicker than trying to get hold of a dr especially a the weekend!

Take care you will be okay.

Hi have heard good things about magnesium for muscle tension , anxiety ,etc, do you know if ok to take with blood pressure tablets, heard some don't mix well and can lower blood pressure to much, may have to ask pharmacist or doc, also I eat banana a day for potassium , helps restless jumpy legs. ❤️

Hi you won't get any withdrawal after 3 days you can come straight off.It takes at least 6 to 8 weeks to get into your system so you are not at any risk of withdrawal.

Magnesium can interact with anti hypertensive drus causing the blood pressure to fall.

I assume the dr will rquest tht the blood presure be monitored at home to void a drop in blood pressure.

Magnesium can affect the effectiveness of other drugs such as antibiotics but the advice is to take the magnesium several hours after taking the prescribed drug.

Best to check with pharmacist or the dr depending what  medication one is taking.

I eat lots of avocados and bananas as \i have spasms, cramps and unable to take potassium in medicine form..

Thank you so much!

It can take time before you start to see results. When I started on mine, it made me more anxious at first. I've been taking Zoloft for 15 years. I tried to wean off of it a few years ago but anxiety came back so I got back on it. I have heard of other things that can be tried that I didn't know about before starting Zoloft so I'm not certain how beneficial these are. There are certain supplements over the counter , exercise, healthy diet, biofeedback, neurofeedback are somethings that may be beneficial. Overall, Zoloft has helped me. It can take a few months to feel a difference.
