I'm getting frustrated with myself as I feel I should be able to put weight on my hip by now. The pain has dissipated to just round my groin and scar and getting better slowly but I'm angry my body won't do more. Others are saying their on one crutch or none and here I am useless. Does it matter I'm overweight is the recovery worse cos of that?
Hi Angela,
You are really doing great. You need to remember that each person responds to the trauma of surgery differently. I certainly wasn't walking without support at 11 days! I think you will see a huge difference in your recovery at 2 weeks. Each week will bring progress. But, there will be times when you may feel some of the progress is lost, and then suddenly you propel forward. Well, that's how I felt. Maybe mark the progress each week not each day. And don't be hard on yourself. It will work against you. I was doing really well at 6 weeks post surgery. Then I tore the muscles around the hip, and started all over again.
Good luck!

Hi Angela, Sorry to hear the way you are feeling at the moment but everybody recovers differently. I did recover quite well at first then you come to a bit of a standstill and feel nothing is improving, my surgeon had the saying you will notice a big difference in 6 days, then 6 weeks and then 6 months.
I am at the 13 week level now, I do walk around the house without any crutches but when I go out I take one, just in case, and the physio said, people take a wider berth if they see you with a crutch.
I am still not sleeping on my side as I find it quite painful even with a pillow between my knees as a lot of people say. I am back driving again, thank goodness and did so at 6 weeks to go to my first follow up appointment, where the surgeon said to come back in a year, so that made me feel better.
My hip replacement was due to a fall, so I was quite annoyed with myself as I was mobile before that. I still get good days and bad. I am a little overweight but I have been trying to lose a bit thinking it may aid my recovery. Incidently I was 75 three weeks ago. Try not to worry as it just takes time. We all want to run before we can walk. Best of luck with your recovery. Kind regards Margaret.
Hi Angela, you can't compare yourself to others folks, your body will heal at its own rate. Do your exercises, get plenty of rest and try not to worry. It's still early days. 😀
Hey hey Angela
11 days I was in your place. It gets better slowly. I Used a walker for 5weeks on first hip its fine now. As lisa said we all heal at our own pace. Some folks were running around when I was barely walking 😀 By the way I'm 6ft3in 120 lbs ,30 lbs underweight & was same at 11 days. Keep up physical therapy or exercise and you'll be fine Kick butt Angela !!
dear angela,
the header of your discussion is: 11 days post--op , non -weightbearing ...
were you told by your surgeon that you cannot put weight on your new hip yet? usually full weight bearing is possible right after surgery ..
or is it too painful to do so?
11 days is really early in recovery from such a major surgery -
how are you getting on otherwise? can you do your exercises?
as said here, we all heal at a differen rate .. I was told to use rollator (wheeled walker) for 6 weeks (until follow up appointment) to make sure that hip joint is more secured ... this was post-op 2nd THR ...
How overweight are you? sometimes when one is obese it might be a bit harder to move around -
Do be gentle with your self, darling ... you are doing great -
love to hear more from you
big warm hug

Give yourself time to heal. Take care.
Dear Angela
Healing is tough and individual. You need to give yourself time. I was using one crutch. Had my first physio about 6 weeks after. I was doing my exercises daily before that. Then he changed me to one cane. So patience and gentleness with oneself is required. Take good care to drink plenty of fluids and rest.
Aww so true gentleness & patience...
Hi Renee
No one has said not to weight bare I can move round the house in my crutches but one or two circuits is enough before it becomes too painful full and I don't know of its the joint I feel or the muscles working!. I don't know if I'm doing an equal amount of exercise and rest.I don't know what is right for each. I do rest an awful lot In my chair and in bed and d8 my exercises when I get up for the loo or going to bed! I am about 4 stone over as my cerebral palsy has affected my mobility all my life! I'm just so independent I want to get back to normal. I thought I was resting before the op but nothing compared to now and I'm not used to it! Apart from the hospital exercises I've been given no further Advice and feel like I've been thrown on the streets ! The pain in the muscles are getting better and every day I feel it is better but I want to walk normal and it's driving me nuts when work colleagues tell me the kids need me back at school as it adds pressure to get back up.I'll get there I know it but it's having the patience to do so! I'm so glad I found you and this forum.you have all been a lifesaver !
Hi Angela,
The difference in who much we can all tolerate depends a lot of how much pain medicine we are taking. If you are hurting like you say, then you are not taking enough. Talk to your doctor.
I was over 3 stone overweight and was walking unaided by the second week. My doctor had me on very good meds to help me cope for the first month or two. During that period he gradually weened me off to ones with a lessor strength. I don't believe for one minute that I would have done as well as I did with them.
Wishing you the best!
good morning angela,
checking in with you to find out how you are doing ...
don't even think about getting back to work (yet) - your co-workers mean well and want to let you know that you are so missed ... and they really do ..
right now and probably for some more weeks to come, you are the most important person to take care of -
sometimes letting go of anger, frustration, resentment and accepting that this is what is right now, resistance is lifted and your body will be able to relax ----
it is challenging, darling - try not to run before you can walk ...
love, light and healing coming your way

Aren't you the sweetest person ever!
I'm having a good day so far but right now it's only 9.15 am! I've been given different tablets from my doc and itvhel9ed me sleep last night which is half the fight!
I sat in a kitchen chair to clear the breakfast dishes and wipe the worktops much to my hubbies dismay! But it wasn't strenuous and I felt ok. He doesn't understand need to move a little to get my hip going or I'll never learn to walk on it.still on crutches 13 days later but I'm not so worried about that now. I have the district nurse tomorrow to take out my 2 stitches so any questions I'll head her way.
Thank you for caring, sometimes it takes a stranger so show you're important in life x
