I am 57 and used to climb mountains as part of my work and research. I had a crushing injury that caused my need for THR surgery. Many things have changed since my hip replacement. Today I would like to ask if anyone out there after years have passed, have pain if you try sleeping on the THR side? My pain includes all of upper leg and hip area. Thanks for a reply.
Yes I do, had both hips done, never sleep on side painful and thw angle is hard with bent knees. I uses lots of pillows. Ask for a MRI every year to keep track of the ball joint area which can wear and cause pain in the cup area which could need replacing after years of wear.
Oh hope4cure!
I am so sorry for this continuing pain. Have they determined the cause or is this simply part of the package?
Another cure2hope4.
Hugs,
L
Hi Carolyn,
I am only 6 months post and about to embark on thr for my other hip. So I am probably too much in the healing phase to be relevant.
My incision becomes less painful each week and I imagined it becoming a non factor before much longer although on a floor mat (vs bed) it remains unhappy.
I would appreciate hearing what you learn as you explore this topic. Please do send us an update. I sincerely hope that it is something benign and resolved quickly. I imagine it is a bit scary - that you had put this journey fully behind you.
Best wishes for a positive outcome.

hi Carolyn,
warm welcome to our hippies forum. .I am not sure if I understand the question.
You had thr surgery 12 years ago and always in pain when sleeping on operated side or just recently?
would love more information
big warm hug

HI all, thanks for your replies. I will ask my doctor about annual MRI's and try to answer a few of your questions. My situation is different because I had crush injuries that caused other issues. But the past year especially sleeping on my side has more pain than it has all other years. I have had constant pain but over the years it seems my body has learned to somewhat tolerate it. This is of course minimizing details of complications over the years. And some days the pain is worse. But focusing on other things in my life does help I have learned the importance of constantly working as best I can to try to overcome or rise above the pain and complications. For me, faith and prayer, inner core muscle strengthening, rest, family, friends, and enjoyable activities that take your focus away from the pain are some things that help. I had a few bad experiences with surgeries, so am hoping my THR lasts longer, but wonder if this new different pain is a sign I need revision surgery? Has anyone been told what to look for or expect? Thank you kindly for your replies.
hi carolyn,
Thank you for sharing ... Your situation is different and more complicated than Hip replacement due to severe OA - other parts of your body must have been hurt and compromised as well ...
Have you had other types of repair surgeries? What kind of treatment did you have to get you up and walking again, working ?
Chronic pain is very challenging to live with and it seems that you have for 12 years ... good days, better days and not so good ones -
What was/is the prognosis of this hip? regular check-ups, xrays, therapy? I am sorry to ask so many questions ...
If this is a new and different pain, I would make an appointment with Ortho surgeon - when is your annual MRI scheduled for? I would not wait ... if something is not righ, better to find out now than later, especially if it is not getting better -
keep on having faith and know that all is well ---
please come back here anytime okay?
I am sorry I can't be of more help -
sending you angel blessings

Never really found the source of pain. Its just always sore both sides ache and sharp pains if I lay on them longer than a few minutes. I'm kind of a skinny bean, not much padding. Scar tissue build up is lumpy, bumpy knots under skin. Will have another MRI soon. Have one every year. I have had friends that bend over and boom out go their hips.
i don't want to be in that position for sure. It's what my dr recommended for maintence because the polyurethane cup between the ball and joint wear fray plastic urathane particles in the tissue causing pseudo tumors and bursa swelling. That's why it's important for a MRI, even a X-ray can spot space in the cup and liner deteriorating and predict when they need replacing.
Bummer. Nothing is forever. But the hip designer manufacturers are getting better and more efficient. There is a new THR out that self lubricates from movement. Now that what I need.
supposed to be less painful to lay on the side of the surgery.
Yes that's right.Same issue with both of mine. You have no pain when laying on your side? That's great. Very lucky. Most of my friends always have some pain when laying on the surgery side.
A simple X-ray can show if there is wear in the joint area where the urathane cup is located between the ball joint .
Active implants tribo fit its called and i am going to be one of the few trail user's when i have my fit in October 😃
Hey great. Please keep me informed of your progress. I will need a 20 yr old hip replaced soon.
I wish you all the best with surgery and recovery. And thank you for the name of the joint.Tribo fit.TriboFit Acetabular Buffer made of a gelatinous-like hydrophilic substance that is supposed to imitate the fluid film layer naturally present in joints. also include “minimal reaming and a press-fit surgical technique. And ensuring that microelastohydrodynamic lubrication is maintained, friction can be nearly eliminated, thus decreasing the potential for wear.” I remember chatting with you earlier when you announced you were to have this type for replacement.
i would really want this new puppy. Keep in touch.
peace & heeling 100%
Thank you, I will visit with my doctors. I was under the care of Ortho Surgeons for the first 5 years. After that the other specialists continued my care. I have not seen an Ortho Surgeon for almost 8 years. Very anxious about going in for anymore surgery... though it's likely I will have to...
Hi, thank you. I tried to go back to work several times, but the specialists said I was compromising my recovery and health. I could not sit down in a normal chair for more than 20 min for many years due to my injuries. Tried to stand on my good leg with two loftstrand crutches for extended periods with a raised desk. My good leg then had problems. I was determined, but things got complicated. Even tried sitting on an exercise balloon and other. I cannot take prescription pain meds, so tried homeopathic treatments: Acupuncture, massage therapy, water therapy, chiropractic care. Used 4" memory foam cut to fit my truck seat and air-filled donut shaped tubes to put around my bad limb and hip to travel. To keep moving forward I have had extended therapy, a close friend is a Yoga instructor and helped me with the few moves I can do to strengthen, I do various light volunteer work, and other focused limited activities. For others, I recommend keep busy, but be mindful of your limitations to avoid further injury. I tried so hard to be my old self prior to the accident, to fight against the pain and limitations, that I had many "faceplants"... (falls)... But, in spite of myself, I am here and have many blessings to be thankful for... just anxious about anymore surgeries...
Hi Carolyn, It has been 3 months since surgery. I am walking with a cane, and if i dont use a cane i have lots of pain in thigh area. I do sleep on my side, I have a large scar tissue that formed on that hip, and it is also painful. If i had to do it again I would not have had the surgery/
Honestly I have experienced many restrictions since THR . It's also part of learning our limitations. I still can't sit up straight in a chair to Long or walk thru a grocery store without aching hip thighs and knees no running. Sometimes I just take the elec cart. At the grocery store . Boy it's funny everyone moves once they see a elec cart coming their way.
I have a handicap plaque. Always walkin to long to far bending, crossing legs ankles and much more has slowly become adjusting to the first THR which as they age (20 years old ) they become hard on the muscles and tendons.
The second THR i had revision done on the latest one done in 2011 due to a recall by the manufacturer.
But I am still lucky to have my mobility. There may be many restrictions but at least I can walk and not stuck in a wheel chair. I just do what I can without stressing it's certainly REQUIRES maintenance and learning how to manage Drs, treatment, and remaining mobile, maintaining strength and plain old fashioned education on these implant components. It helps to know what the components consist of and how to prolong the life of the implants.
So so for me it's success.
dear carolyn,
wow, sweetheart, there seems to be a lot more going on than "pain when sleeping on THR side" ...
I hope you don't mind bringing this to your attention ;; you wrote:

for 12 years you have asked your body to perform as if the accident never happened - but the accident did happen , darling and she is coping the best she can and doing a wonderful job ....
you can let go now -- she is perfect the way she is right now, and you know that --- love her, be gentle with her and thank her -
