My daughter who is only 17 has suffered with knee dislocations since she was 8 years old. We have discovered she has numerous problems with her leg and knee and she is scheduled to have a lateral release, an osteotomy and a trochleoplasty all done at the same time in September. We have been told she will have no movement in her leg for 6-8 weeks, intense physio for at least 6 months and will take about 2 years for full rehabilitation. I am just wondering if anyone else has all 3 at the same time and what to expect
Sorry Sheena, I'm absolutely no help in that I have no idea what all that means. I'm just waiting for a TKR on one knee then a similar op on the other once that one is stable. Incidentally I am 76 yrs old and am so sorry to hear that your lass has had to endure such problems at that young age.
However, my every sympathy with both your daughter and yourself and I do hope that everything goes well for the family.
I don't have an answer for such a delicate and lengthy proceedure but I am wondering if this is being done by a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. Do you have a childrens hospital available in your area. Personally, I would ask for a second opinion before putting a child through something like this. I can understand the 6-8 weeks as that is about standard time for a bone to repair when its broken but I just become very concerned when a little kid is involved
My daughter is now 17 so is no longer a little kid and has suffered multiple dislocations for 9 years, her surgeon is the best surgeon for this and at 17 years old she will be treated in an adult unit by an adults orthopedic consultant. Her father and I have not taken this decision lightly and believe it will help immensely as she can go through periods where she has to have physio for months and hydrotherapy as her knee can dislocated up to 5 times a day
It certainly is martinarevlo but you know she has suffered so long with this illness and she always has a smile on her face. We will be glad when she can hopefully go on to lead a normal life
I'm in the U S and children's hospitals and pediatric specialists see kids till they are around 20 or so. My grandson is type 1 diabetic and was under the children's hospital care till he was 19. They are just well equiped to youthful body changes. Obviously you are comfortable with what you are doing and are the ones responsible for the outcome. I can only wish her the very best.
Thanks for your opinion, I am in uk and here they go to adult at 16, she has had 5 different consultants and has finally reached the top of the tree. Her surgeon is top of his field and has the highest success rate as well as being at the forefront of research for this specialist surgery. I do realize she is very very young for this but unfortunately her skeleton is so badly malformed that this really is her last option.
I just hate it when young people are faced with such a dilemma. I've been fighting a rare tumor for q2vyears and getting ready for my 11th surgery as soon as infectious disease says the art bit of staph is out of my leg.....the big difference is I've been at this son e age 65 and now I'm 78. Its put a crimp in my retirement plans but at least I got all my working years in and we traveled a bit before all this. I know life's not fair but having a young person hurting should be painful for everyone. I've got 4 kids and 9 grandkids plus 9 greatgrands and fortunately all are doing well except the one with Disney is. He just finished his 2nd year at the university so maybe he can handle it from now on. AgAin, best wishes for the future
Hi Sheena, we all expect age to throw us a few curve balls, but it is really sad when young people have to experience this at the beginning of their lives . I would suggest you look for or ask your medical providers if there is a support group for families facing these problems. If so they will be able to provide you with lots of support & information. Thoughts & best wishes are with you & your family.
Hi Sheena, has your daughter had her surgery yet? I have just had a trochleoplasty on my right knee and am 3 weeks post op. I am only 26 and have suffered from patella displasia as long as I can remember. I spent 6 months on the wait list in Melbourne Australia so I feel lucky thatI got to the top of te list as quickly as I did. I am walking and have minimal pain at this stage. the only struggle I have is that I cannot bend past 55 degrees. My surgeon said not to worry at this point and I will see him again in 4 weeks and hopefully it is bending on its own by then. I hope all has gone well for yout daughter. It is a long road and sometimes can be more mentally challenging than physical. She has age on her side so I have high hopes she will have a wonderful recovery with great results from her surgery. Hi dayna sorry it took so long to reply. Hope you have recovered well from your surgery. My daughter saw her consultant and he is delighted with her progress although her quads in her right leg have forgotten how to work since her surgery. We are now 14 months post op and she has a terrible limp and still attends physio twice a week. Our next plan is to get her a machine that's omits electric currents to try and kick start her quads. She has nearly full bend now and certainly has enough for her to lead a normal life and to walk properly so hopefully this machine works. Surgeon said that since she had never been able to walk properly it is like teaching a baby how to walk from scratch so it will take time x
I'm not sure if you will still check on this, but it would be great if you do. I am a 19 year old female, I was told before my 19th birthday that I would need a Trochleoplasty but due to wanting to come to University, I put it off at the time. However, since then my knee has severely deteriorated. Before this, I have already had a TTO with MPFL reconstruction, and an Arthroscopy with Chrondoplasty so I didn't rush to make it 3 surgeries in 3 years for obvious reasons.
However, I now do have to have this procedure, and I was hoping you could give me as much information as you're happy to about how the recovery went, whether your daughter would recommend having it etc. I really hope she did have a good recovery and all went well, but I don't know anyone else my age going through this - let alone anyone even having heard of this procedure, so I hope you don't mind me getting in touch.
My 13yr old daughter has to have a trochleoplasty, mpfl reconstruction and a lateral lengthening. She is scheduled for surgery in a month. I was hoping you may have some insight now on recovery and management.

I am 32 and have had recurrent knee dislocations for 20 or so years. despite seeing several specialists and being fobbed off for years with physio that didnt work ive finally been diagnosed with hypermobility, i have my preop for trochleoplasty and mpfl in two weeks, my knee has been out of place since a bad dislocation 10 years ago. FINALLY i got heard and taken seriously. Nervous about the op but heres hoping it helps. Any advice etc welcome
How did you get on with your trocheoplasty? I’m 32 and also just had trocheoplasty and MPFL reconstruction. I would be curious to know how you got on and what help did you get?
