2 years of lightheadedness and dizziness

As a child I suffered from vertigo and motion sickness, but as i grew into my teenage years it sorta calmed down a bit, had it once or twice but would just sleep it off, as I hit my 20's it started up again which caused me to develop anxiety. But again it calmed down for a few years until Nov 2013, i got sick with a stomach bug but felt extremelyyyy lightheaded, i couldnt understand what was going on so i went to a Doc who told ne it was the virus and it was going to get better as soon as i felt better, but days, weeks and months went by and still the same lightheaded feeling, unbalanced and felt sorta dizzy. almost 2 years later and seeing sooo many doctors, i was diagnosed with Vestibular Neuritis. I had sooo many tests done, MRI, Cardiologist and ents who couldn't figure it out. Now im doing vestibular therapy every week or 2 but still feel this lightheaded feeling. Some weeks its better than others but it spikes ny anxiety because sometimes i still don't believe the doctors and feel like something is terribly wrong .. Am i the only one who feels like kife isn't the sane anymore, i have a 3 year old who keeps me going but there are days where i feel like i cant even walk of how bad this feels, i just want to know am i the only one who CONSTANTLY day after day gets these flushes in my head or feel dizzy and lightheaded ALL THE TIME????

I feel like this all the time.. I also have MS but know this can happen with any of these balance diseases..i am on this board because I have a spinning vertigo that started 6 months ago that is different than my usual heavy-headed-off balance- foggy headed-non spinning dizziness I've had for years with MS. I too, am doing Vestibular Therapy and so far just feel worse. I have no diagnosis for the spinning vertigo except I along with 4 other drs do not believe it is the MS. One thing I believe they are right about but why they can't figure out what it is upsets me because the anxiety of not knowing is maddening too..i don't do much anymore being afraid a spin attack will happen.

I know how horrible you feel and hope for all of us someone will figure out the cause and cure soon!

Jaz,

I too have been dealing with dizziness and being light-headed. It is a feeling that is annoying but you learn to deal with it. It is like a fullness and feeling like your mind is over-working itself which is frustrating because people look at you like "you are fine!" I am currently waiting to see an ENT and am seeing a physical thearpist now for my neck pain which when triggers migraines which worsens my dizzy condition. I understand your pain all the way! I hope they help you soon as I hope the same for myself...

hi jaz,

i am 22 and also have MS and it is terrible and sometimes when anxiety attacks too i get too dizzy and scared, cold handed and it is too scary. hope that someday someone will help us dealing with this. i have been experiencing this for 8months, i get too dizzy when it is afternoon like before lunch. and i am so scared i may faint and fall out

hope that we all have a good life back again, because i used to live now i dont know sad hope we all get better.

Hey, that dizziness must be triggered by something. Figure it out by your own, look what's the situation your'e in, did you feel nervous about something, stress... Look it this way: there are people who faint when see blood. So seing blood is some sort of trigger of some complex process in brain which cause person to feel inconvenient and eventually faint. I think simmilar process is going on in our brains too, triggered by some event in the past, repeating it from day to day and now brain thinks that's normal. I figured out, for example, when i go to work - i get dizzy. When i arrive on my work - i am dizzy. While working - im dizzy. When i not working - im not dizzy. When i take some anti stress medic - i'm not dizzy even on work. My only fear is that i could develop some real illness until this whole thing dissapear...

- Coffee too can be trigger of dizziness (not always), so be careful.

I forgot to mention - check your neck for circulation problems or start now with neck related exercises - exercise will make you feel better anyway smile

Crack,

Great point via neck circulation. I am experiencing dizziness as well as neck pain which I am currently seeing a physical therapist for. When my neck isn't sore, my dizziness is still existent but not as bad. Migraines add to dizziness by making it worse of course.

Im sorry you have to go through all of this too, maybe you also have VN, i saw soo many different doctors before I got the diagnosis. This is just soko debilitating and frustrating, try to see a specialist in Dizziness. I googled mine and found a great one, if you were here in NY i would definitely refer you to him. Good luck and i hope we all find the right answers to all this madness. The stress does make it worse, but we just cant help it, and they do say that MS patients may have this symptom so maybe it is a part of it. Wishing you all the best xoxo

Thank you for understanding, yes its like a heavy head feeling and when i am stressed or over worked it seems to be worse, i do get headaches also with it which they believe may trigger it, but headache or no headache this is always there. The flushes are the worst because you feel like you are about to pass out, my doctor says i need ti see a physical therapist as well for tge neck and back upper back pain. Good luck with all of this too! I wish we can all just get a break from this! Try ti find a dizziness specialist, thats my advice to all who has this problem. Hopefully we can all just live a normal life again, SOON!

Hi Tishaane, im sorry you too have to deal with all of this too. Anxiety makes this all worse, we get worked up and boom there goes this feeling. I think Yoga would also help i read somewhere, therapy is also great, just talking to someone will ease some of the stress off of our shoulders

I agree, i feel like there are times where i am not thinking about it and i dont feel anything, then all of a sudden i realize it and boom. I also feel like overthinking this will cause ne to become sick, i avoid caffeine at all costs. Caffeine and anxiety don't mix, but I do try to relax more and not over stress, when i feel this coming on i just say its VN and im not dying because automatically you fear the worst. My doctor has me on some meds as well.Something really light so lets see if this helps, thank you for your advice! Best wishes and i hope you feel better soon!!!

yup, same here... im feel great and i realize that and, as you said - BOOM! Got dizzy... All things after that i do just like you - try to be more relaxed, try to not over stress.... This will pass, we just need to be focused on the best result and it will fade away just like it kicked in. Doc has told me that... Although he described me some heavy psy medics, i decided to try without them... It's working but it's hard. Best wishes and get well.

Hi jazz have you asked your doctor to send you for a MENIERES Disease test I suffered this about 30plus years ago told it was virus got me so bad I have spent 3days in bed crawling to bathroom on my hands and knees finally I got referred to a ENT consultant and bingo the answer to my illness but I must say when you get heavy cold sinus infection it upsets it my drugs for it are beta hoisting chloride 8mg 4x day just give it a try

I'm on my 5th dr now and feeling no hope, like this will continue going to dr after dr with no help.

If I was close by I would definitely try your dr.

It is unbelievably frustrating not knowing.. The symptoms are bad enough but to not know the cause and what to do or not do incase I am aggravating it.

How did you get diagnosed with VN finally?

I dont think anything triggers it , i have had it since jan 2014 when i was stood at top of some stairs and felt dizzy but laughed about it, since then i have been referred to ENT  after lengthy waits , thinking it will go away but feel its getting worse, I am like others i do not believe the drs know about it dont know what to do with us, I am now with the physiotherapists having eye exercises.  I cannot go shopping on my own as i have become anxious , nervous ( which before i was confident ) i am now on anti depressants as i am crying because i cannot manage to go out shopping and browse like i used to, My whole life has turned upside down. I cannot drive at night as i have been diagnosed with disequilibrium resulting from nerve damage from the vertigo.  I am finding it hard to get the doc to keep signing me as sick, is anyone else off work claiming sick for this. oh i am in the UK.  I am 53 years old and female.  Why cant it just go away !!!!!  i have been told is classed as a disability and will have to learn to live with it.....great

Sometimes looking up triggers it. But many times I am just sitting still or lying in my bed and it happens. I have an appt. with a specialist in ear problems, but it's in a month! Someone mentioned neck problems--I definitelly have pain on each side of my head, but I never thought that was related. I thought it was arthritis, which I have in my knee. I also get migraines and have had a few since I "came down" with this three weeks ago. But they don't seem related either. I'm going on the assumption that it's vestibular neuritis and am doing the Elpay maneuver exercise each day for that. But I'm not sure it's helping. Even if it IS VN, we have no idea how long it will last. Weeks? Months? Years? Sadly, I don't think the doctors can tell you that. Everyone says, "it will pass."  If only it would! Marion

Sue, im so sorry you have to go through this as well!. When mines started i got laid off of work and was unemployed for about 6 months, i was grateful because i needed it at the time, just like you i stopped doing everything, literally. I was always afraid that something was going to happen to me. I am very active in my church and one of the nuns was a therapisy who ive known for years, i started meeting with her every week and it helped ALOT. I am grateful to God for her. I suggest you see a therapist just to talk about it. Believe me i felt the saaame way, now im working, going out, even went on vacation twice since December. I know its hard because anything triggers it and inhave my bad days (REALLY BAD ) i think we learn how to cope with it. But it does get a little better after a while, i also suggest you see an ENT doctor and start Vestibular therapy, it might not work right away, but give it time. I still have my days where i feel like im literally going to drop dead but i just pray on it. Hope you feel better and keep me posted!

Hello marion, i know the feeling, i kept telling myself "one month", 2, now its almost 2 years in November. It is extremely frustrating, and i know what you mean about the appointments, i have another test due at the end of this month that i booked in FEBRUARY. yes the neck can definitely trigger it i heard and my doctor did tell me to see a physical therapist, but i can only do so much with all these appointments.

Its so annoyinggggg, i hope that one day we all just wake up with noooo symptoms and just stay that say : (

What did th dr do for you ?
