3 1/2 months post op and discharged from physio but I must still walk sideways

apart from when i have stiffend up from sitting for more than 10 mins I am walking without a limp, although I am carring my non operated hip slightly higher than my operated one, he reckons that will right itself as the muscles continue to develop. I asked about going to the gym and he said no rower for another 6-9 months but everything else, especially the leg ones (no idea what they are called!) are really good but nothing on high resistance for a while. Exercise bike every day still good to do but walking sideways builds a different set of muscles so I must continue with that one for a few months.

Sounds like you are doing really well! I'm hoping to get some physio after seeing the surgeon at the 6 week meet next Tuesday as so far I've just been doing the few exercises given to me at the hospital.

Yes I get stiff when i sit for more than 20 minutes, whats going on with that. This is new didnt happen before. Plus after sitting for a while when i get up to walk with a limp. Told my doctor in order for me to walk without a limp, I have to switch when I Walk. My Dr. Laughed.

Dear Valerie ...is the sideway walking something you do as an exercise? sounds good as a diferent muscle group is being used ....sounds that you are doing great -- I am getting more and more confused regarding physical therapy - so many of you are getting PT after 6 weeks and some, like me, from day 1 - I am seeing my PT twice a week now and always am in pain afterwards .. is that good or not good, I don;t know - but I was in a terrible shape prior THR - need to build up strenghth as other leg/hip needs surgery too ... sigh .... take care - big hug

Do you still have pain???? Has the pain stopped?  I am 6 weeks and still in pain as bad as the day I left the hospital. My husband is on me to go to the gym.  Are you kidding in this kind of pain. No way! I can only swim IF it does not hurt my bad knee too much.  The exercise bike is a no no as anything that puts pressure on a bad knee too.  It needs to be done next.

the stiffness is mental isnt it! but i am hoping it will go away eventually or its old age -  surely not!!!!!

yes the sideways walking is an exercise the PT gave me to do, preferably with one of those exercise bands for more resistance but I tend to walk sideways frome one room to the other when i remember so the band doesnt happen a lot ! another one i will carry on doing is stepping up and down onto the non operaated foot with toes pointed 10 times forwards and 10 times backwards (holding on cos i am a wus)and also the exercise bike daily - i was in terrible shape as well because it was too painful to exercise and as a consequence i had no stamina, hopefully this will return and increase now -  take care and dont overdo it we are not training for the Olympics!!!

apart from stiffness after i sit down no pain at all but I am 3 1/2 months - everyone is different and i expect your bad knee is not helping because it must also affect the way you walk. Hope all goes well and after the knee op you will be leaping around again

take care xxx

thank you Valerie ... oh yeah, stamina needs to be build up too ... we are on our way - one (side)step at a time - have a good night
