Hi, I had my THR 4 weeks ago and all is going really well so far. I can manage around the house without any sticks and have never watched soooo much daytime TV in my life. I feel as if I could be doing so much more as I am fit and able and even my husband said surely bending down once is not going to do much harm. Am I being lazy still taking things easy and not doing the hoovering? I am wary that things need to heal internally and previously being sporty I know that the initial recovery process is crucial.
Hi Fiona, I had a thr on 14th March, I thought I was well enough too, 4 weeks later the same as you....it dislocated!! I had it manipulated back in, so that put me right back to the beginning. It's now 6 weeks since the manipulation, still sore, & still very tender where the staples were. Read back at other peoples, also speak with your physiotherapist, they'll guide you properly. Hope to hear from you soon.
Take Care. Julie.
Hi Fiona
This is something you just can not rush. Rule of thumb is it will take about a year to fully heal. So just be careful and tell your husband you are not being lazy.
You can try different things but if he wants you back in hospital he will feel it is his fault if he pushes you. Take care of your hip and it will take care of you.![]()
Hi
I am 3 weeks been told to use 2 crutches for 6 weeks but I do find it hard round house and will use just one to carry a cup ot tea and do things in the kitchen I also have bent I do so they same way I did before op I put op leg out straight behind me I don't break the 90 degrees rule then
Hi Fiona ... this is a question I ask my self often ... I am 9 weeks post op (going on 10) - hoovering is such an odd movement - I have one of those cordless, light weight dysons (small house) and because I live alone I felt I had to at least attempt the hoovering ( lots of crumbs every where because I have become so darn clumsy) and always paid a price for doing so - so don't do it yet -
2 days ago I felt really good - so I hoovered, went out for a long walk, drove to an outlet store - I mean I was in heaven !!!! alas ... yesterday went straight back to hell .. couldn;t move at all -
If you are up to it and haven't done so, watch the THR surgery on youtube and have your husband watch it with you .... to me this was an eye-opener and ater watching it, I had/have so much more respect and love for my body - didn;t realize what a major operation it is .... not for the squamish though -
be kind and gentle to your self today .... take care
Hi, Don't break the 90 degree rule, don't do the hoovering, do do a bit of dusting if you want to, do make a cup of coffee, do do your exercises, don't go spring cleaning or cleaning cupboards, do have a bit of chocolate, do get pampered and do take it easy. One step at a time, so don't be in a hurry, it will still be there in a few weeks time, when some of the restrictions will be lifted. Happy recovery.
Hi Fiona NOOOO you are not, imagine if you do that one thing and you dislocate you new hip. You will know when you can do these things, everyone heals in their own time and yes all that daytime tv is pants (I know lol).
We all want to run before we walk, do your exercises and take your time, your visit with the surgeon after 6 weeks will tell you when you are ready to do heavier things.
You have to grow new bone, build muscle, heal and this goes on for the next 9 years. I try to do a little extra every day, just a small thing to build your confidence and keep you upbeat it is so easy to go into a fug! Keep smiling if hubby says this again put a youtube video of the op on for him (dont watch it yourself).
This mite help him underatand. Take care and hugs Mags
It's good that you can manage around the house with no sticks at 4 weeks I still have to use one as I can't put my total weight on my new hip yet. A lot more healing needs to be done to the muscles.
The hospital say 6 weeks for a reason - to let the muscles heal to keep your new hip in place. I wouldn't bend yet nor rotate.
Hoovering is supposed to take even longer 6 - 8 weeks - there is a surprising lot of force needed from the hips and legs in pushing a hoover.
Just be pleased that you are doing well and be patient. Those extra weeks will pass before you know it. good luck!
The restrictions that we are given are to reduce the risk of dislocation. Maybe bending once would not cause it, BUT DO NOT RISK it. Other people can Hoover, do what you can obeying the restrictions, possibly dusting etc. my husband is still doing most of the housework at 6 weeks, he had his hip 4 years ago and remembers how it is. His comment was that no heavy housework comes with the op instructions till at least the 6 week checkup.I have booked a surprise weekend away for later on when I have recovered, as a thankyou
I was not able to watch the you tube video only for a minute : ( it gives me heeby jeebys
Thank you all so much for taking the time to reply. I guess I will just have to behave and leave the hoovering until after my check up. I have managed to do the washing by (slowly) by piling it on a towel and dragging it through with my grabber. Thank goodness for laminate floors! I do find the odd escapee sock lying in the lobby though. I managed to watch the YouTube video the other day and now realise why my shin was sore just after the op. I had to fast forward some bits though but it was very interesting - lots of respect to the surgeons. Promise to behave x
Oh no Julie, at 4 weeks we feel we are doing so well too. May I ask what you were doing to dislocate it?
Thanks, he is great really but you are right he would not want me back to square one again.
X
Thanks Barbara, I will take it easy and force myself to have some chocolate as you recommend. Might even have some wine to wash it down!
x
I cannot imagine having to use 2 for the whole 6 weeks. I am lucky that they have let me progress at my own speed. Will try your tip with leg out behind.
x
Hi Renee, I managed to watch most of it the other day OK most of it was from behind a cushion and I had to fast forward some bits but hubby can't watch it!
x
Thanks Mags, when you put it like that.....will just have to be good.
x
Thanks Anne, hoovering will just have to wait then.......
x
That must make such a difference that your hubbie knows what you are going through. And what a lovely idea going away when you are over the worst. Enjoy x
Since week 3 I do my washing now by putting it in a very large carrier bag using the grabber as there is no way I could use a basket! I use the grabber to put it in and take it out of the machine too. Then at least I feel I can contribute to chores!
Glad you are going to be sensible!
