6 months after hip surgery

My mum who is 74 years old had hip surgery 6 months ago. She was feeling ok, walking slowly etc. Recently she moved to her country house where she did lots of walking I guess more than she should have done.. Now her both legs are swollen. Is this normal? Any idea why would that be and how to treat it? Thanks

I suggest that she should elevate both above the level of her heart and apply Ace bandages to the swollen areas and repeat as necessary. Good luck. Richard

I have a similar problem but i only had surgery eight weeks ago. l was doing well and them
developed two wooden legs that is how my legs feel.
i have now been diagnosed with OEDEMA in both legs and am taking water pills not that they are helping much.
l am showering my legs each night before going to bed to make them feel more comfortable.
Please see your doctor about the problem to make sure something more serious is causing the problem.

Hi do you by any chance live in a hot country

No i live in the UK

You can get a swollen leg after surgery, but not normally both legs.

You can get it in both legs if you are inactive and not elevating your feet regularly and remember what creates good blood flow in your legs is walking heel toe with full weight bearing, it pumps the blood up

the crucial few words were removed by my phone. It should of course have read ICED ACE BANDAGES! Cheers, Richard

Hello, No it is not hot now but will get pretty hot in summer. Approx +35. Why would this matter? Thank you

Yes, good idea. I will tell her and hopefully swelling start coming down. Very strange that it is on both legs..
Thank you!
