acid reflux

Hi everyone (sorry if the post is a bit long)

I started off in November with a feeling of liquid in my throat and at times felt like it was going to seal shut, i spent 3 hours like this before deciding to visit A&E who told me i had nothing in my throat and i was having panic attacks because my pulse rate was sky high (i think it's fair to say i got myself worked up).

The next day i went to see my GP who also told me i had nothing in my throat and put it down to panic attacks, sent me home with nothing and told to calm myself down and it would go away. After a few days i couldn't take much more and went back, i told him i needed something for my throat and he gave me antidepressants for panic attacks, since that was all i was getting it was worth a shot taking them. I spent 3 days in bed really ill and still had stuff in my throat

so i stopped taking them and went back to the GP.

Acid reflux was mentioned and i was given omeprazole, they made me burp a

lot, which wasn't very nice as they seemed to keep sticking in my throat. I had a horrible Christmas and new year barely being able to swallow or have any chocolate ot goodies sad. I went back to see my gp again and he changed the medication to lansoprazole i have been on them just over 2 weeks and things have improved a lot, i had my first proper meal today and managed to eat it all. I just seem to feel bloated more now and things haven't completely healed. I have also stopped having alcohol, coffee, cheese, chocolate spicey or fatty foods. I have just come down and had a cup of tea and i know have heart burn, so maybe the tea as set it off. i don't mind the heart burn so much just can't stand the feeling in my throat. I don't know if to go back and see my GP again or just see if things continue to improve, it's been a nightmare to say the least. I'm also worried about my weight as i am boarder line under weight. Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any reply's

Hi Paula,

Sorry to hear that you're suffering. I would go back to your GP, explain your ongoing symptoms and ask if he can refer you to an ENT consultant. Your experience sounds very much like mine, although my GP diagnosed LPR straight away. I had a sore throat, a perception of a lump in my throat and constant throat clearing. (I thought it was a sinus infection) However, I went back to the GP after two weeks on Lansoprazole and he referred me straight away. I saw the consultant within two weeks who examined my throat with a camera (I didn't feel a thing) and was able to see that my throat and vocal cords had been affected by the acid, which confirmed the diagnosis. I was then referred back to my GP. My referral didn't affect the medication - I'm still on Lansoprazole - but my GP said it enabled him to decide on any additional medication I might need and how long it would take for things to heal. Your GP or ENT consultant should also be able to discuss your diet with you. I was given a pamphlet at the hospital which detailed foods to avoid.

However, you're doing the right thing in watching your diet - make sure you drink plenty of water, too. I also bought a wedge pillow specifically for reflux, which raises my head at night and seems to help.

I, too, find that eating or drinking anything can set things off - even water! After two months on Lansoprazole I still find I'm clearing my throat after eating or drinking anything, although things have definitely improved.

I hope that things improve for you, too. Best wishes.

Thanks for the reply, i have a few cushions under my mattress but will look into getting a wedge pillow.

Things have improved enough for me to eat now, so i'm grateful for that but just wish my throat would clearall together but sounding like something i might have to get used to. Reading on the internet it says to avoid tomatoes but my doctor said i can have them and any fruit as it's good for you, its just so confusing as i have never had to watch what i eat before as being a little under weight nearly all my life. I guess i will get there in the end. I will go back and see if the gp can do anything else for me, thanks at least i am lucky enough to get in to see them the same day.

HI my name is George,  and I have the same symptoms,  sore throat and feel something in my throat. I have no problems swallowing when I'm eating,  but when I pass saliva I feel something stock in my throat.

Just this week I went to see a throat specialist and said it all look ok just irritated.

Before this I had been diagnosed with gastritis,  and I was fine, it all started with back pain I went to see my doctor and he gave me pills for the pain. After one week of taking the pills I started throwing up, feeling nausea and the feeling of something stock in my throat.  I have tried nexium and like 6 different pills to treat the acid reflux.

George.
