Airport Body Scan

Hi Hippies:   I went from Palm Springs to Colorado on a two hour flight without my cane and wore my compression socks both ways.  Had RHR October.  (7 Months)  I did fine.  I was concerned about the flight, but I got up a couple times and did my foot pumps in my seat.

Actually I took my cane, but didn't need it.  The Airport walk was a long distance but I did fine.  Took some pain pills with me in case I needed them.  But my question is I had a note from my Dr. saying I had the surgery and each time they made me go through the Body Scan x ray and then padded me down.  Someone told me that the Body scan x ray was bad for your hip???? Anyone know about this?  .

Thanks

I never heard anything that the scan is bad for the hip. Having a note/card won't prevent them from insisting on a scan of any type.

Never bothered either of my hips that have THR . It’s as if your going in for an X-ray to check on the THR but a lot less radiation. I was given a card for airport security it was never given any credibility. No one gets thru without security checking you with either the walk thru or the wand-hand held check. I usually get both. I learned years ago since terroist attacks began it’s for everyone’s best interest. No one has ever been harmed with hip replacement while going they airport security . Even on jury duty I went thru the same security system as airports.

No harm to hip replacements from going through the scan. It is pacemakers that should not go through the scanners, there is usually a notice to that effect

Dr’s note is not really valid.

Since my RTHR I have been on several flights. Some airport scanners, the really modern ones, seem do recognise the implant and no pat down needed. Others do not so pat down needed

Hello Stacy

I also had a note from the surgeon and a card but the airport officials said that anyone can now print these off and they have no credibility.  I go off big time going through security screen with having plates and hip replacements but you just explain and they do their check. I was a bit stroppy once and all that did was cause aggression of the security person and I was delayed/waited (deliberately) for the full check and nearly missed my flight.  Just let them do their stuff, it does not hurt you.

Totally agree, nothing worse than the airport staff getting stroppy and delaying you.

when you think about it passports are very complex and yet they can be forged accurately enough to be used successfully, so a doctors note would be easy peasy

Never heard it is bad, but i ALWAYS get scanned now.   I just let them know why it goes beep, and they smile and scan me manually.  I now allow a few extra minutes for this.

Thanks.   I guess its a part of traveling from now on.

Yes, it seems to be.

When they scan me in the 'star trek transporter' machine they see metal in my stomach area, but the hand scanners pinpoint the leg.

Now that is funny.   When I came home from the Hospital I was doing a Journal of each day and how the surgery went.  It was the Good, Bad and mostly Ugly.  I was so upset as to how the progress went that I was going to write a short booklet for new THR "People".    I wasn't happy with my Surgeon and was shocked at what had happened to me.  Now at 7 months I am doing very well.   I go to the gym every other day and ride the bike and I do Real Estate so I am on my feet all day long.   I am a Author and have my publishing Co. so I knew I could pull it off.   But as time went by,  I decided not to.  It is a shame though that people think that you have the surgery and 2 weeks later you are normal.  Just saying...............

Stacy,

Yes, that is the common misconception, it's an easy operation, and you'll be on your feet in no time at all, even among surgeons who should know better.

I am almost at the end of my THR recovery now, the health service has admitted liability for the mistakes made, and we are about to agree compensation. The amount is immaterial really, I would rather have had no errors made in the first place, and I am still left with a 'wonky' ceramic hip joint that may need further complex surgery in the future.

When that is behind me I will feel that a chapter has closed, and a new one is beginning. 🍾 🥂

Best wishes

Graham

No point carrying a card in my opinion. Antone could easily forge a letter like that and I hope airport staff everywhere would disregard anything other than their scan results.

I've had lots of scans both airport and hospital (CT MRI & x-ray) and am confident it does no harm.
