Antidepressants helped with anxiety?

Hi all, I just wondered if any of you had any positive experiences with anxiety subsiding after taking any antidepressant? I'm on citalopram at the moment for depression and anxiety and I'm hoping they will help me. X

Hi Leanne, anti depressants like Citalopram are often used to treat anxiety as it's often a side effect of depression, the thinking being once the deoression starts to lift the anxiety starts to subside. Citalopram is mainly prescribed for depression but you will only feel an improvement after around 4-6 weeks.

The usual dose is between 20 and 40mg.

Hope it works for you.

OK thankyou for your reply Neil. I did go to the docs for depression originally but anxiety has always lingered so I'm hoping the citalopram do work. X

I was on escitalopram or Lexapro as it is better known and it worked for me along with a combination of amitriptyline and clonazepam.  It was the best I ever felt, unfortunately I haven't been able to afford health care or to pay out of pocket so I haven't been on meds in a few years now.  Make sure you discuss your medication concerns with your doctor or psychiatrist and take notes on how it makes you feel, if you have side effects or it loses its effectiveness just talk to your doctors. It may take a while to find the right dosage, they can add other helper medications, or change it altogether if it isn't working or causing you problems. Good luck!!
