Anxiety and grinding teeth

Hi

Since I was diagnosed with anxiety, I’ve noticed that my jaw regularly feels tight and aches. Is this common?

Hi Sarah,

I can't say i've particularly paid attention to my jaw, but my anxiety does cause me to bite down on my teeth alot. I find myself kinda grinding my teeth, especially at night, my front teeth enamel has started wearing because of it. Doesn't help that i have a diviating palate though i suppose, my jaw often makes a clicky/popping sound so may have just gotten use to it.

Hi there, yes definitely. There was days I would yawn and it would hurt because I had been grinding and clenching so hard. Sometimes you don’t even realize it.

Hi Sarah. Yes definatly in my case. Sometimes pain really severe and according to my dentist iv been grinding. Also  when anxious eg in therapy often really severe. My dentist has made me a mouth guard and I use it when pains present in face due to anxiety. Definatly helps me. May be worth trying .

Yes, you might want to wear a Mouth Guard or Splint at night, because it happens a lot while sleeping.

It all depends on wat has been going on. ave you been having extractions on one side of the mouth. If te bite is off it can cause stress on the jaw.

We are supposed to see te dentist every six monts, if this is not the case, make a Dental Appointment. You can look up an NHS Dentist in your area on NHS CHOICES. Get a checkup it only takes about twenty mins.

You might want to look into TMJ/TMD - this can be caused by stress, tension & anxiety as well. There are exercises to relax & strengthen your jaw & stretches that can help as well. Read up on it & see whether you think it applies, I would say. wink I, since a few month, are dealing with it - I don't grind but I clench my jaw & this can get really painful. I started doing it at day-time (which was easier to control) & I managed to get it better with the exercises etc, now it is better at day-time but I started clenching my teeth at night instead - I work on it though & it gets better, luckily. I use a guided meditiation for jaw relaxation & teeth grinding on youtube at sleeping time, which I have found to be pretty helpful even though that usually is not my cup of tea. I guess links would be deleted here but if you think that could be helpful or just to try it out, I would guess it is easy to find. Also, as others suggested, look into a mouthguard/dental guard - you can buy them in the store or online or ask you dentist (which will of course be more expensive) to protect your teeth from damage. wink

I can’t get a Dentist appointment until 22nd January. I was going to ask about a mouth guard. Are they uncomfortable? Can’t imagine sleeping with something in my mouth.
