Hi, after being diagnosed with an underactive thyroid in April 07 and just given tablets by GP without no explanation I stumbled across this website and have been coming back to it every week in hope that there is someone who does actually feel better once diagnosed and on the correct dose of thyroxine but it all seems to be doom and gloom about GP's not doing anything about it saying results are normal!!
I am on 150mcg a day only by pushing my Dr to up my limit due to the fact that I still feel extremely tired, tingling fingers, losing hair, itchy scalp, inability to lose weight I gained through having an underactive thyroid even though I have been dieting and still don't feel any better was told it can take up to a year!!!!!!!
I have now gone back to my Dr's and insist something be done before my marraige breaks up!!! and have been referred to an Endocrynologist.
Has anyone else been to see a Endocrynologist and did it make a difference!
Good luck at the endo. I was diagnosed almost three years ago and still feel pretty rotten. It can take a long time to feel well again and sad to say that many docs don't want to know how you feel once your numbers are in \"the range\".
Get yourself clued up about this condition, find out eveything you can so that you have some idea of what is going on.
try \"googling\" thyroid and see what comes up, there are lots of places to get information and insight.
well I was Hypothyroid for over 2 years and when i hit rock bottom i found out what it was and I had every symptom going.
I have been on the medication now for 6 months and am now on 200mg my latest levels are spot on and I feel soooooo much better the thing to do is to get the final symptoms sorted which i think are due to water retention.
i will get better but it wont be the doctors who get me there it will be what I have done.
so yes you can get better.
Knowledge is power
P.S I will put something on this forum showing what I have done since my last entry.
Hi Chan -
Yes you will feel much better once your levels are \"normal\".
Please bear in mind that certain drugs can affect the absorbtion of thyroxine.
You will gradually get so that you recognise the signs and symptoms
when you are either hypo or hyper. I certainly get told when my husband
notices that my eyes are getting baggy or that my mood is low.
If you don't feel right then a quick blood test will always show whether you are on the correct dose.
Good Luck !!
