Autism, sensory comfort and wearing nappies — has anyone discussed this with their GP?

Hi everyone,

I’m an autistic adult in my 30s, and I’m hoping to hear from anyone who has experienced something similar.

For some time, I’ve found that wearing traditional taped nappies gives me a genuine feeling of sensory comfort, safety and reassurance. This isn’t sexual, and I don’t have a diagnosed medical need for nappies.

I also experience considerable anxiety about accessing toilets when I’m outside, particularly when travelling or visiting unfamiliar places. Knowing that I have protection available as a last resort helps me feel more secure.

Ideally, I’d like to wear nappies throughout the day and night because of the comfort and reassurance they provide.

I’ve been considering discussing this with my GP or a neurodivergent specialist, but I’m embarrassed about bringing it up and worried that they might misunderstand or dismiss my reasons.

Has anyone experienced similar sensory needs or toilet anxiety? And if you’ve discussed something personal or embarrassing like this with a healthcare professional, how did they respond?

I’d particularly appreciate hearing from other autistic adults who’ve had similar conversations.

Thanks for reading.
