Mahalo for welcoming me into your discussions. This is my second question. For those of you who've been diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis, do you have more than one joint that is effected? For my son, this is what I'm worried about. Thank you in advance for your attention.
Unfortunately I was diagnosed with AVN and had a crushed femoral ball and had hip replacement. 5 years prior I had my metatarsal bones of my feet broken and a diagnosis of fribergs infarction (necrosis of the 3rd metatarsal bone) but that healed as long as I paid attention to the signs, pain and didn't wear high heals. I had no clue about the hip. I don't know if that helps

was this due to trauma or sponteneous Avascular Necrosis ?

Mahalo Lori. I'm so sorry for what you've been going through, and that you're still in pain. Had you been prescribed prednisone? - that appears to be the root cause of my son's AVN. He did have a fall in 2012, and fractured some ribs. The hip may have been undiagnosed at that point. I

The AVN is supposed to have developed as a result of prednisone prescribed for nasal congestion, Renee. I hope your own condition improves, and wish you the best.
I tripped over a laundry basket in the dark landing on my left side and thank God I didn't hit my head on the dresser, I was in pain then at the chest but no broken ribs on X-ray. Sometimes that don't show up until a week or 2 later. My foot however was fractured by my 3 year old stepping on it and they gave cortisone shot at gp office after X-ray showed no break but when went to podiatrist 2 weeks later for pain he saw the calcification around the metatarsal bone and later found necrosis of that bone. I have broken my feet 3 times just walking. I do think it may be osteoporosis undiagnosed because I can't drink milk, but no one takes the time to do more tests, they just move to next patient. So I've been focusing on taking glutamine, probiotics, enzymes and calcium with D3, magnesium, and zinc. Who knows perhaps it will improve my muscles and keep free radicals out so my bones can strengthen
Oh my, Lori. I flinched when I read the broken foot part! Yes, we have calcium with D3, magnesium and zinc. Hope your recovery proceeds and you are less in pain.
I have both of my knees affected. It is extremely painful and I take pain medicine and I sometimes have to use a walker and or a cane depending on the day. I am 36 and was diagnosed at 33 at mine was from a prednisone steroid pack when I had tonsil surgey. It ruined my life I was an active mum to 4 boys and now I can barely drive due to pain.
Hello, in my case I'm fairly young 30 y.o and was diagnosed with AVN and it did affect both of my hips, I was unaware of my condition for a number of years and was working a heavy duty job which took a toll on my hips,one more than the other,just had a thr 3 days ago. But in my case it did affect both hips,hope this helps
Hi Curlie: I'm so sorry you are going through this. Have you checked out the knee forum, also? You are very young. Thank you for sharing this information with me. This is why I came to this forum; we can all learn something. I have had 2 courses of prednisone when I was closer to your age, and wonder if I might have problems in the future. Sending you and your boys a huge hug.
Mahalo T, for sharing this. Were both hips diagnosed with AVN at the same time? I'm glad you had the operation - from watching my son recover, he is physically better than pre-op. He is at 4 weeks. Now he has to overcome the depression and work on his stamina.
You are the same age, so I'll be keeping an eye on you, and wish you well in your recovery.
