I’m in a dilemma. Because I have avoided surgery and most medication’s that reduce BPH symptoms. I have a large medium lobe problem volume 63 cc. I’ve been able to manage without taking Alfuzosin. In the last three weeks I’ve had much worse retention at night. I just started taking Cialis. I’ve been on Cialis for the last few weeks but it doesn’t seem to be working.
I’m scared to get a procedure and waiting for new procedures to be developed. I think I’m gonna have to start taking Alfuzosin ( any comments on taking Alfuzosin). I’m still thinking of getting a procedure possibly though but I’m trying to avoid it as long as possible.
Does anyone have any thoughts about my situation on getting on Alfuzosin to manage current retention with adherence to a procedure at this point? l m Just looking for advice or comments on the situation. I live in Ottawa Canada. There are possibilities to get greenlight covered under insurance but there are private clinics that do the other procedures. Again any comments or advice would be appreciated. I’m trying to avoid surgery and cope but after eight years of managing. I’ve had sudden retention more in the middle of the night and Cialis isn’t working.

You sound like a perfect candidate for self-catheterization (CIC). It’s an easy-to-learn technique that will empty your bladder whenever you want. So not only will you and your bladder be happy, but your kidneys will be, too, because they will be protected. I was in your position 12 years ago and have been doing CIC ever since. I also thought it would buy me time to wait for better procedures – and it does – but I was so happy with it, that I just continued.

Hi Jim thanks for the reply! But I have a fairly large meduim lobe. So wouldn’t it be difficult to get the catheter over it and into the bladder. Is that easy to do?. I think I will only need it at night right now. Do you think it’s viable with a large medium lobe? I’m taking Cialis but it doesn’t seem to be working I was gonna switch alflusin.

Shouldn’t be a problem with right catheter. For example, Coloplast’s Speedicath Hydrophillic Coude. A coude tip is curved so it slides around the prostate easier. It’s the one I use. I started with FR (size) 14 which is a good starting size and then dropped down to FR12 when I got the hang of it. You could get samples in both sizes and see which works best.

I’ve had bph for >15y and never taken a single drug or had any surgery
