Bang on side of hip

Hi I got a thr on my left side just over a year ago and have made quite a decent recovery with my main aim in getting back to being able to walk again achieved. However whilst entering a garden yesterday I banged into a metal gate which had a small piece of metal sticking out about an inch.My leg has been a wee bit stiff today but still been out walking without mishap I was just wondering if any of the other patients have had small mishaps and were any of them causing lasting damage to the new hip would be very grateful for any info thanks

Hi I was 8 weeks post op and my sisters dog got under my feet and I fell backwards on to the floor lol I was shockedcand thought oh no !!!! But got up and was fine thank goodness :-) and no lasting damage just a bit of a bruised bum lol xx hope all stays OK for you :-) xx

Guess we will feel protective about our hips for a long time! I still (17 weeks) feel very protective in crowds.

Take care.

Hi Paul,

to answer your question I have had many mishaps over the past 20 years . THR 3 times. I have missed the last step on the ladder stepping down landing hard on my new hip of 6 weeks. Went in for X-ray all was ok.mthe dr said my new hip is stronger than the bone hips. Then another THR I fell flat on my hip. Again the hip was OK.

it was good to check on them after each injury X-rays showed no issue.

Thats how I put my mind at ease . It takes time for the bone to grow back into the hip components to stabalize the joint and implant components. So if you have any doubt just call in for a X-ray explain what happened.

Stay Safe My prayers are with you.

HOPE

Hi Paul,

wonderful responses - you might have a nice bruise -

of course, when you feel something is not right or are just worried, go to your GP and have it checked out - just for peace of mind !!!

Thankfully I haven't experienced that, although regularly get bashed on my bruises by my Labradors waggy  tail.

I hope you've got no long lasting damage, but I guess a new hip is as good as new, so any injury to it should be considered as a new injury ? Hopefully it will just clear up on its own!  Take care x

Hi Paul, I've had 3 hip surgeries and a number of mishaps after each , the worst being slipping and doing a full set of splits on a wet bathroom floor at five weeks post op following my second surgery. Plus a number of falls leading up to my 2nd op . No lasting harm or damage caused by any of my mishaps - we do feel very vulnerable after these big ops - there's so much emotional and physical investment in them it's easy to be terrified that things can go wrong . I think the body is fairly resilient in terms of dealing with minor mishaps , it's just not always easy to shrug these things off when you consider worse case scenarios ! Hope your leg is felling better today xxx

At 10 months I fell over a step in a crowd of tourists in Mdina, Malta. Landed on my side, hip replaced to the floor. Picked up by a very nice man dressed as a medieval knight. Very sore next day but no lasting damage

Oh hopefully you will just have a big bruise

Me three days after coming home my dog on my bed was not as close to the edge as I thought an move I thought he was going to fall instinct took over and I moved to quickly and awkward the pain I felt scared the bejeebers out of me to scared to move but was ok I tell you the recovery period ages you I swear

So Knights in shining armour really do exist ! Xxxxx

Thanks very much for all the kind replies.I am feeling a bit better today and finished off a bit of fence painting in the garden which involved a bit of stretching and bending which caused a bit of slight stiffness in my leg which got me thinking this is probably the cause of my slight stiffness the past week as I have been painting a bit and not probably the bang on my hip.Its like some of the replies have said we are probably over protective of our hips now after the op as we all know what is involved in the long process but greatly appreciate the replies and have given me a bit of re-assurance.

Hi Paul am only 4 weeks out so don't have experience with this , hope you continue to do well

Thanks Msky and hope your recovery goes well.I was very cautious with my recovery however if there is one tip I can help you with it would be try and go to the swimming pool as soon as you feel comfortable with the idea.I went at around 6 or 7 weeks and just done some gentle exercises gradually building up but felt great progress being in the water which really helped with my recovery and good luck with whatever way you try and recover Im sure with a bit of patience you will get there.

Excellent advice.

Hello Msky,

Only 5 weeks out now your close to 6 weeks. Isn't it amazing how much better we are in just one more week.

Keep up with all the recommended exercises and the caboose squeezes are the most important to stabalize our core strength.

soon you will be enjoying a pain free life with your new bionic hip. 🚴🏼

I enjoyed the pool exercises is so much fun and helps get back into shape.mthe best part after pool exercises was we could sit in the hot tub as long as we wanted. Helped relax all the muscles and ready to walk the park.
