The neck issue is definitely part of a vestibular issue as well. There are three components that help us to maintain our balance, the eyes, inner ear and our muscles. The sore neck is usually a result of an over dependence on the neck muscles trying to over compensate for the balance issues. The vision and inner ear disconnect is called the vestibular occular reflex. The brain is trying to make sense of all of the mixed signals that it is getting. Have you done any vestibular rehabilitation therapy? That will help along with the other things that I listed. The MRI is important to rule out any other issues that could be causing the dizziness.
If it is vestibular, it will not end as quickly as it began. Time and other measures are all that will get you there. The Gabapentin for me helps my neck issues because it is actually prescribed for nerve pain. I see an Orthopedist for my neck and she up'ed the dosage to 200mg per day.
You will get over this but, it is going to take time and work. Doesn't seem like it should be this way but, that is the course of vestibular issues.
Not sure what happened with my posts. The first one disappeared so I entered the second one. Not really, unless the neck issue was related to a disc problem, torn muscle, etc. The issue with the neck for most vestibular neuritis sufferers is muscle related and there is nothing that will display on the MRI. The vestibular occular reflex issue is related to the signal that the vestibular nerve sends to the brain and matching it with the signal that comes from the occular nerve. Again, nothing to show up on the MRI. If they did an MRI on your inner ear I assume that it was with contrast so that they could see if you had an acoustic neuroma, a benign tumor on the vestibular nerve that can cause ongoing dizziness. With those issues ruled out it would appear that you are dealing with vestibular neuritis. My research indicates that most times when you are diagnosed with migraine associated dizziness or chronic subjective dizziness it is because they cannot find any other solution. It is common place to be diagnosed with anxiety with a vestibular condition. I have a link that I can send you by private message that was posted on Positive Health that details out a lot of what we sufferors experience in being diagnosed if you are interested.
Curious as to why they would not have prescribed VRT for you.
Hi Michelle My botox is on May 6. Ive had topiramate and it made me very depressed so much so I felt suicidal so I stopped them. My next lot of drugs was going to gabapentin which sounds like it could be a good one. Ill have to see how the botox goes. I realise now Ive gone from not being able to set foot in a shop to shopping all friday and saturday so I have improved a lot. Im just frustrated that I am still dizzy. I wore myself out so much I have spent today sleeping. I think your brain works harder sorting out your vision that you end up absolutely shattered. My dream would be to go back dancing and ski ing. Both of which needs perfect balance which I used to have. I doubt that will ever come back. When this first started they said I had a viral infection but clearly two and a half years on, that cannot be the case and theyve ended up saying its silent migraine. I think thats just cos they have no idea really.
Hi Paula and Michelle - sorry to sneak in on your conversation ! I am on topiramate (as michelle knows now) think it helped abit quite strong though but might be not working so less stress at the mo or the fact I ve completely stopped any alcohol which has helped heads abit. I am on gabapentin for occipital neuralgia possibly due to neck problem awaiting a CT scan. Still dizzy/lightheaded and have some silent migraine symptoms. Some days much worse than others. Like you Paula my doc said it was post viral 18 months ago, then ear infection, then sinuses, then vertigo plus migraine now neuralgia and migraine ... oh and surprise surprise anxiety. In the meantime I am rapidly losing my career and sanity. (Think I might ask the goldfish for a diagnosis - he'd probably have a better idea of what's wrong !)
Hi Lynn I have found that working helps. I finished my last contract in dec and then had six weeks off and it drove me mad. Luckily I got my current contract Jan 14. Not too stressful thank goodness but keeps my mind off it. I do four days a week and I honestly could not do another day. I cant go out at night because of the dizziness and the tiredness. I have neuralgia in my cheeks and jaw and neck but they say its all part of silent migraine. I can now control the anxiety which this forum has helped me with. Initially I had two panic attacks as I thought I had MS and my best friend thought I was making excuses to not go to rock and roll. I was so scared about what might be wrong and that I would be the same forever. Plus the constant dizziness which was much worse then, just drove me mad until I couldnt stand it anymore. So managed to keep my career but nothing like to the same extent I had it before. The lighting affects me drastically and sometimes I cannot set foot in large stores like ASDA then other times Im OK. It can change on a minute by minute basis. My ears have gone full and pulsating now since I started typing on here. On a funny note Ive had to have my eyebrows redone because last time I had botox it gave me the appearance of wonky brows. Embarrassing but then I dont go out so who cares !! Luckily I am a lot older so staying in permanently isnt so bad as it could have been. But giving up the latin and ballroom which I love is bad. Now putting on weight.
Me too havent done any exercise since I ve been signed off work now size 14 and increasing (i am a school teacher - aged 50 this yr) awaiting a procedure which will hopefully help the neuralgia headaches. Must get out walking but hate the dizzies!
This site is great. What job do you do. Well done for keeping it up.
Hello terry when I go for my check up shale I mention about my neck getting looked at? I actually have a massage booked today as it's a little heavy and I have a headache today. I was meant to have yoga but she does massages as well so Iv optted for that instead.
X
ENT said it was migraine vertigo
I'm actu waiting on my dr to call me today as my neck has been hurting last couple days & tingling headaches on & off. So wanna get that looked at. Terry thing it was below said to me too have alook into it so thought worth a try.
Hope you have a good day Hun
xx
Interesting you say tingling too. Are your pains one sided? Mine are left back of head mainly sometimes thru to my eye and I get dizzy and tingly down my head alot. I saw a neurolgist who thinks I have occipital neuralgia and neck stiffness often confused with migraine or can be with migraine too (and can cause dizziness) Have a google of occipital neuralgia and see what you think. I am waiting for a surgical procedure to try to release the nerve and nerve block injections for the pain. xx
My dr rang me and she said come in today I'm going there in about 20mins
So I shale let you know. It really heavy and stiff today. And my dr said you're correct it could possibly be linked.
Good luck with the op hunn
Xx
I would. I had massages early on and that really helped. I still have some stiffness and I am looking into acupuncture. Most days now I fell almost 100%. I've just got to find a way to get it off if my mind and stop noticing the minor issues.
Time is a great healer, even though with this condition it is not pleasant waiting to see results. I really think that you should ask about vestibular rehab therapy.
Best of luck with your doctor visit. Let us know how it goes.
Hi Lynn
Im a PA. A couple of years ago I had a really high powered career working late every night and getting really involved with everything then I volunteered for redundancy and stepped down to being a PA in a much smaller company. Im doing the same now. No late nights, no weekends. Not much stress. I have pins and needles over the top of my head and pain at the back on left hand side., Its where the corrugator muscle threads thru your head and irritates the trigeminal nerve. Botox stops this hence my appointment on May 6.
Hi terry
I went to my dr to get my neck checked
She said it could well be connected.
And to keep an eye on it and we shale refer you if the pain continues.
I had a massage today ( managed to get one booked ) and my god it was soo painful. She did say you could well do with some Pyshio and when she was doing it too I felt really dizzy like all these toxics crap was coming out. I feel relived abit and had a nice bath. But still aches but not as bad as this morning. Will let you know how my neck feels and goes. And dw will deffo be going drs to moan to get refered.
Iv heard acupuncture is great! You should so do it honestly! I was online looking for local one earlier
my cousin gets it done on nhs as she has back issues. But I'm gonna pay private for that I think will see how the neck physo ect goes
Xx
Good to hear. The VRT will help if it is a vestibular issue and it will make you feel worse at the beginning. The key is to not over do it, though. 5 to 10 minutes max. You will get over this, just try not to set a timeframe for doing so. A good positive attitude, which I see you have, goes a long way as well. I would also suggest that you try a low sodium diet, 2000mg or less each day. Give it 30 days and I believe you will see results from it as well.
Best wishes
Ty terry
hope you're well x
3rd time lucky stupid phone!
Went counselling today ( I go every Wednesday )
Went fine then went shops after to get lunch with my cousin and for no reason bam! Dizzy swaying and blurred vision 😫😫😫🙈🙈🙈 why me I can't even grab some lunch in a shop!
Gonna call drs again Friday to hurry up my neck Pyshio and they said they would up the beta blockers 2 in a month if I don't start to c any difference ( which so far I'm not only helping the anxiety not the dizziness/blurred vision I need something for that!!! ) it's getting to me!!
Am I ever gonna be normal?
Hiya
Sorry to hear you've had a bad spell. It can up and down so be patient. I feel really for 2 days then rubbish yesterday. Chin up the meds take time xx
Doing pretty well today. The barometric pressure is falling and it usually takes a day or so for my inner ear to adjust to the change. How are you feeling? Better I hope. Is your neck feeling better after the massage you had?
Stores and shops may bother you for some time. Took me 10 months to be able to go into some. Look up vestibulo ocular reflex. This will answer some of your questions and concerns and give you a better idea of what causes the issues you experienced. You are going to be fine just have to be patient with this stuff. I really believe that you need to be doing vestibular rehabilitation therapy. Less than 10% of those afflicted with this stuff fail to compensate.
You are young and apparently like to be active so those are great positives in your favor.
Thanks lyne it's just annoying ain't it when you can't do simple things like go to a shop
I'm getting my hair cut today hopefully I be okay in hairdresses I should be as I'm only sitting there haha.
Hope you're well
