What type are you?
1. Combination oral contraceptives
They can be used to prevent recurrent cysts.
2. Progestogen-only contraceptive pills (POCP) in the US: POP, progestin-only pill
They can CAUSE ovarian cysts.
"There is an increased risk of ovarian cysts, perhaps up to 30%. ..."
Dr. Mary Harding, Patient.info
Functional cysts are necessary for an ovary to make eggs. 90% of women will never notice the hundreds of them that come and go in a lifetime. The vast majority of all types are benign.
They CAN be SERIOUS. Early diagnosis and treatment can be the difference between saving or losing an ovary. They can be an emergency. If in pain, don't wait, see a medical professional immediately.
thanks for the info, because I smoke my doctor suggested the mini pill but I also have a large cyst on one ovary and 2 on the otherside. No clue why she gave me these pills knowing I have cysts. I didnt start the pills waiting to get a second opion
Please, find a specialist and get that second opinion. There are different kinds of cysts and unique aspects to your blood work that may have influenced the decision. But, most likely she just didn't know. And, don't expect telling her to go well. The correct information is fighting a longstanding entrenched belief. I have a post in this forum in the Ovarian Cyst section. Find the post with the references. Copy, paste, print, whatever you like. Do yourself a favor and take it to all your doctors. The worse the doctor acts, the more you know you're doing them a favor, too.
