Big improvement with extra swimming

Thankyou to all of the hippies. You have inspired me to do more, in my case swimming, and I have been able to ditch all of my pain killers. I feel sooooo much better, am walking more and no more sciatica (fingers crossed). I also think being able to download months of stress and fears has helped.

Hi Lyn, thanks for the encouragement about the swimming. I think I'll go tomorrow.

And did I read that you're a Kiwi living in Australia? If so, congratulations! That was a very good win.

Yes I'm afraid my family are Aust-Kiwi's or West Islanders as i like to refer to myself. Very happy household today. We are sitting here watching replay at the moment. 3am was even a little to much for mad keen son, he sat up, but fell asleep about half time, or so he tells me.

I love swimming and I'm really missing it! That and cycling was the only exercise I could do pre op and cannot wait to go again!

When can you go swimming? I'm 5 weeks post op and I'm hoping surgeon will clear me at my 6 weeks check?

Fingers crossed anyway

Billiemaw - Your skin must be completely healed over, otherwise the chances of an infection are huge. Get the Doctor to check you cut site throughly.  I was swimming at about 4 weeks, but not before I had informed GP of my plans. The first time I visited he said NO, and then come back in a weeks time, and we'll see, he approved my plans. Do your post surgery exercises in the water, using the weight of the water as resistance, but pace yourself well, you wil hurt if you overdoo it. I use a water log or noodle as they are called in Australia, and get in the deep water of a heated pool, and ride a bike, or tread water, just slowly for a start, then I start my version of breast stroke with my arms as well as treading water at the same time, you do move along in the pool, I have been able to build up my level of fitness, and can stay in the pool for over an hour now, working the whole time, and not get to breathless.

Morning from Sheffield England , beautiful day here &it makes you feel so much better, I too can,t wait to get back swimming it's my favourite exercise &so gentle on all your muscles, I am 6wks post op and see my surgeon next wk I hoping I get the all clear to swimming but I've been informed by the physio not to do breast stroke has anyone else been told this, thanks love Suzy.

Excellent Im sure I am fully healed so fingers crossed.

I have heard that about the breaststroke before, but I couldn't do breaststroke anyway, my hips didn't let my legs do that opening movement.....I developed a whole new swim stroke, kind of breaststroke at the top and a crawl at the bottom, or when my legs got tired they would just trail along behind me. Still enjoyed it so much tho

Hi Suzybobs. I've not had my op yet but when I asked my surgeon about swimming post op he said was ok to front crawl at 4 weeks breast stroke at 6 weeks Annie in Manchester

Hi Annie, that sounds great hope I get the all clear next wk, have you got a date for your op yet? Suzy x

Sounds interesting whatever floats your boat, it's all good exercise might try that one !

Hi Lyn

Greetings from Exeter!

Sounds like you are doing well. Swimming and walking are both pretty good, tho don't try rugby for a while! Yes, when Ireland and Wales went out...I cheered on the kiwis as did most folk...and pleased you won!

Keep painkillers handy in case of an extra strenuous day, and maybe a glass of wine too.

Hi, I was told by my surgeon not to do breaststroke ever !!  X

Very modified breaststroke, somewhere between dog paddle and rowing a boat with my arms, only. only using my legs for bycyle or treading water.

Lots of other people must have been reading my posts about swimming. The pool was crowded today, everyone very patient and encourging, makes a change from some of the selfish grumps, ordering others out of their way, with the statement my doctor told me I had to come and do some exercies in the pool, darling what do you think I am doing here, and many of the other people as well, and very friendly with lots of teasing from the Aussie's about NZ winning World Cup.

Hi Lyn!

The Sunday paper health advice said swim fast then slow then fast for max exercise impact . Likewise with walking. Sounds good to me...

Happy swimming

Funny in a nice way how an event like the World Cup can bring people together. My local pool is overcrowded, but that's because it's nice. When water walking I often find people to talk to, and they all have stories of recovery.

A great win to NZ!!!!

Swimming is the best sport in my book. will have to do my best to remove myslef from the bed in the morning and hit the pool. thanks for your encouragement.

Aiming for the 2nd of December all being well and no cancellations etc.  I have been swimming regularly for the last 4 months in an attempt to get fit for the op. So plan to swim as soon as is safe to post op. Fingers crossed you will be back in the pool soon x
