Blood Results

Hi all can anyone help, i have just got my latest blood results the line saying Mean corpusc.Hb conc (MCHC) 296 g/l            315.00=345.00g/L  last months was 32.0g/dl        31.50-34.50g/dl  i dont understand this at all should i be worried the Dr is ringing on thursday! i know one of you guys will be able to help.

Hi Liz. It stands for mean corpuscular haemaglobin concentration. Obviously your doctor will tell you if there is anything to be concerned about but from what I understand, it is only when the result goes over 380g/l that it is considered very high. If you google it you will find more information. Hope this is of help. Take care, Debbie

On my blood results sheet it says the normal MCHC (mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration) range is 300-350 g/l, (30-35 g/dl), although your standard range seems to be a bit narrower (315-345 g/l, 31.5-34.5 g/dl). Your 296 g/l for this month is just a tiny bit low. Last month 32g/dl it was in the range.

The others have given you the numbers. The figures vary by a factor of 10 depending on the units the lab is using. l is litres (1000ml), dl is 100mls so the figure per litre will be 10 times what it is per dl.

The MCHC is the amount of haemoglobin in a given volume of packed red blood cells - they spin the blood in a centrifuge and then take a measured amount to test for the amount of Hb. All the numbers together tells you quite a bit - you can be anaemic for several reasons: not enough red blood cells, not enough Hb in each blood cell and other things too. You can also have too much HB: too many red cells, too much Hb in each cell.

There are a lot of causes but taking the jigsaw pieces of the results narrows down the underlying cause.
