Breathing Issues without a reason

Hi everyone,

I’m 22, physically fit, with no pre-existing conditions or mental health issues. For over two months, I’ve been dealing with persistent breathing issues that started shortly after a mild tonsillitis. It’s unclear if there’s a direct connection. EBV IgG came back positive, but it’s not clear whether the infection was recent or older. The tonsillitis cleared up after 4–6 days. I then went to the gym three days in a row – symptoms started on the fourth day.

Symptoms:

  • Constant urge to take a deep breath (unpleasant and pressing), but it doesn’t feel satisfying – especially when breathing through the mouth
  • Irritation or pressure in the lungs (without cough or mucus), usually worse in the evening – maybe from trying to breathe deeply all day
  • Occasional subconscious abdominal tension or light cramping (not painful)
  • Symptoms worsen throughout the day, usually better in the morning
  • No shortness of breath during exercise, no asthma

Tests so far:

  • ECG, basic lung function, blood tests, abdominal ultrasound – all normal
  • Blood oxygen levels are fine, even when the urge to breathe deeply is strong
  • EBV not currently active

Current situation:

  • Doctor suspects possible late effects of EBV infection, but not sure. EBV could be also a year ago
  • No sign of organic/structural issues

My questions:

  • Has anyone experienced similar symptoms?
  • Could this be related to the diaphragm or autonomic nervous system?

Grateful for any input or shared experiences!

Best regards
