Butans Patches and Severe Constipation

Hi,

I would be very grateful to hear from anyone who has had the butans patches and suffered constipation. I drink quite a bit of water, Take 2 sachets of Laxido every day, plus lots of fresh fruit, loads of vegetables in the evening and have just bought some prunes. My bowels seem to have gone to sleep. I have absolutely no desire to go, I haven't any pain from not going but it's been 5 days again and I just don't know what else I can do.....

Does anyone recommend fibrogel? Some say it can do more harm than good. so haven't taken any yet. I need the patches as my pain is very bad so coming off them isn't really an option although I will probably have to do without them if this continues. I have used suppositories but I can't realistically go on doing this every few days. I'm desperate for advice please...Thank you.

Hi Sarah... I was using Percocet (an opiiod medication)and it too causes constipation. I'm not familiar

the that stuff you're talking about but here in southern California I've used an over the counter laxative

called Exlax...my wife mentioned baking soda and water but I didn't try it...good luck

I was given movicol and senna worked well for me

Sarah. Sarah. Sarah. Hope I can help !!

Got the answer for you.

A Little History. I have been on oxycodone & hydrocodone for about 3 yrs unfortunately !! I had some bad constipation requiring ,,well extreme action ,, then i read where chocolate will help , so loving chocolate anyway i started eating more & haven't had a problem since. I just eat milk chocolate candies daily & keep some next to bed since im up many times a nite. I sure I eat more than most would but I luv it so

I had tried laxatives, softening pill but they all gave me extremely painful cramps. Even prune juice cramped me.

Keep on the move 😜

dear sarah,

wow ... that is scary ... seems to be heavy duty pain medication - instead of trying things by myself I would get my doctor involved ...

maybe you have to discontinue Butran but please, again, have your doctor get involved ...

please let us know how you are getting on, okay ...

big warm hug

Hi Sarah

I have suffered from severe constipation as well,  I had a thr 3 weeks ago, and I think finally i have improved a little, it makes you feel crap - excuse the pun!!  I didn't go for 7 days either after th op.  I was taking lactolose 15ml twice a day and senna.  I didn't feel the need to go and also wondered if my bowels would ever work again (constipation is something i had never suffered from previously).  Finally i did, but once again it was several days until i went again.  I finally admitted defeat and went to my gp, he prescribed Macrogel (i guess like fibrogel)  this sort of works but it i am still not regular and i now get chronic cramps!!  I have now stopped ll the painkillers /opiads except parecetamol, and  couple of others that i ws previouslt taken, so I hope this will also help.  I understand from my consultant and gp this is pretty usual after hip ops, but that doesn't really help does it!!  Anyway good luck and hope it helps knowing it is definitely not unusual

Renee, yes I agree. I'm getting a doc's appointment next week. I tried coming off the morphine, took the patch right off. My pain tolerance level hit a 10 - yes really - so I HAD to put another patch back on. I've been drinking gallons of water, taken stool softeners, plus Laxicol sachets and ended up with diarrhoea. I much prefer that to being severely constipated but it's obviously not the right thing to do so off to doc's as I said. Thank you for reply/advice.

Aww Christine so sorry you're another constipation victim. At least you've got your new hip! It's horrid though to have absolutely no urge to go and realise the weeks are slipping by. Well one week....bad enough.....I'm pleased you're gradually able to come off some painkillers. My THR isn't till Oct/November at the earliest so I'm off to get my doc's advice on this next week. Thank you for replying to me and I wish you well in your recovery
