Campral

Hola a quien sepa. 5 días sin Alcohol. ¿Sería O K empezar el campal ahora (el antojo  empezando a volver)? ¿Cuánto tiempo tomará hacer efecto? Gracias a quien responda. Me siento mucho mejor que la semana pasada. Nunca más quiero beber Alcohol.

HI Susan. Check with Paul since I am not qualified....no medical traing but I do wish you best of luck. Robin.

Yes, you can start taking it now, that is the way it works best. It wakes about a week before you really feel it, it creeps up on you. If you are expecting side effects or some feeling from it, you will be disappointed.

It is completely innocuous, you don't notice you are taking it, it can be taken with other medication without any problems.

All that will happen is that after a week or so, you will suddenly find that you stop thinking about alcohol.

BTW, did you detox (diazepam etc) or did you just stop drinking? Has the Campral been prescribed to you or have you obtained it through an alternative route?

Gracias por la información útil. Acabo de dejar de beber. ¡Gran incentivo, aunque!

Well, the immediate alcohol will be out of your system, but not the long protracted withdrawal (paws), which is what is giving you the craving.

I detoxed once with diazepam and I was back on the alcohol within a month. The seond time, I was armed with the knowledge, took high doses for the first two days, then less for the next two days and I came out the other side without the pain.

But this time, not only was I prepared on how to detox, I knew what would happen if I didn't have something to follow it up. Hence the Campral.

If you are above 60KGs (memory tells me that is about 9.5 stone) then it is two tablets morning, noon and night. Which means you will go through 84 tablets in two weeks. A complete full size box has 168, enough for four weeks (not a month, some GPs and pharmacies have a problem in understanding the difference.)

It is recommended for a minimum of three months, ideally 12 months, to let your mind and body recover from any addiction to alcohol. Please check how many you have left and organise to see your doctor for another prescription.

Make sure that your food isn't laden with sugar, as that is a craving many people suffer from, when they come off alcohol.

It is normal to get your appetite back when not drinking, because when you are drinking your body is getting all the calories it wants from the alcohol (alcoholic calories are the easiest for the body to absorb, so it goes for them first).

This comes on to a secondary problem, in that those that are daily heavy drinkers, not only do not get the vitamins they need, any that the body tries to produce, are either inhibited or washed out the system.

Most people who come off of alcohol, need to feed their body paticular vitamins (well, they need them when they are drinking, but trying to get anyone to do something sensible when they have an alcohol addiction, is fairly hard). It would help to know of how much and how long you have been drinking to advise on what is needed, Ideally your GP should be knowledgeable on this subject, but often that isn't the case. BTW, a multivatimin a day, doesn't do the job.

Hi Susan. Just wrote you a really long post and it just disappeared(so angry when this happens! So a shortened version now...

A massive well done for reaching 5 or 6 days. I know how hard this is for you, and me, but this is a big achievement so stick with what you're doing. Don't dwell on your guilt or you'll drink again. You kids will come round and be supportive once they see how much your trying. Mine always do.

Spoil yourself for a few days until your stronger. Like watch tv, read, eat good food. Yes eating helps me when I'm craving so is very important. Drink lots of water..carry on posting on here as it helps..

And be proud of yourself this week. Take care xx

Hi Susan,

I took the same view and managed to do it - a long time now. It was refreshing to read your comment about not wanting to drink alcohol again.

I don't know anything about Campral though, sorry; probably part of a newish method eh?

Well, just to wish you well and if you don't want drink alcohol again, I truly hope you achieve your goal.

Good luck.
