I was recntly sent to see an obisity Doctor, who like me was a little confussed as to why i was sent to him.
YES i am over weight, but i am on a lot of weight gain medications forr diffrent medical problems, tha also cause loss of apititie and nausea.
I do not eat a lot at all on good days i eat child size portionsand lots of times i eatt nothing to a few mouthfuls. enought to hold down my meds only.
The Specialist was concerened and said i needed to be eating more protien and Vegtables and also suggessted To my GP that i was prescribed a regular Multi Vitamin and thiamine.
When i saw my GP she refused to prescribe me them, telling me i just needed to lose weight and it didnt matter i dont eat much.
The Specialist excplained in his letter that my weight was duue to family genitics and medicastions i am on, Yet the GP didnt seem to care.
Can a GP refuse to give you meds that a Specialist is suggesting you take?
Also this specialist picked up on something else, that i was not breathing to well due to the way i sit in my wheelchair, because of my spine, despite the fact i have requested to see a back specialist for many years. I have had my requests ignored. and my back has got worse. Can a GP refuse to refer you to a specialist ifyou ask to be seen by one? I was diagnosed with low bone desity 8 years ago in my lower spine and suffered serve pain in my back for many years and all i get is pain meds which i rather not be on.
It'd probably be cheaper and less stressful to (put two fingers up to this GP and) buy your own A-Z multivitamins and minerals, add a cod liver / fish oil capsule as well (supermarket brands will do,, Sainsbury's do some good ones), double dose, 1 of each in the morning and evening (with food),, but of course discuss this with you GP...
Just because you are maybe Obese doesn't mean that you aren't suffering from malnutrition
I personally would find another GP as this lot are a disgrace
Sadly this WAS my new GP At a new surgery in my village (which doesnt mean that the doctors dont talk to each other mind) and my first meeting with her. After 6 years of seeing one GP and now becoming wheelchair bound with no real answers as to why. I decided to try a new GP. Seems i gtting same disbelief that anything is wrong with me. Even when speiclaist write and tell them there is. They dont even belive my Carers who are telling them i am not eating and who are the only people who can help me GET to food due to my disabilitys, which IF i could just get to see a back specialist i truelly belive i may be able to walk again.
The only thing i cant answer is why my muscles are always tight and tense and wont relax. But i walked for years like that till my back leant over to much so i know i can walk like it again if i could JUST get my back seen to!!
Sorry there is no edit button for me to add what i forgot to say on my last post... so having to add anouther....
I have to have all medications prescribed as i can not get medications out of bottles or packaging. And by law, the carers are not aloud to give me over counter medications or anything that is not prescribed by a doctor that does not have a doctors label on. there not even aloud to put a plaster on me if i cut myself. its all very silly.
Yes I'm pretty sure a GP can refuse to prescribe even if the specialist / consultant recommends it. This is because each Dr is basically responsible for his or her own prescribing; i.e. they carry the can and cannot say "consultant told me to" if something goes wrong.
I found myself in a similar situation recently, was referred to a consultant at the hospital, he recommended X treatment and the GP didn't want to prescribe it and offered no logical reason why!
Kind of makes you wonder why they bother to refer patients to hospitals/consultants for expert opinions on treatment if they are then going to ignore the advice that is given.........
Personally I changed GP and got what was recommended. Some GPs are bad, some OK and some very good.... sounds like your one is either bad or just OK, you deserve better so change GP if you can. - Unless you live in the middle of nowhere there should be some choice.
