Can i exercise with an over active thyroid?

hi all. i have just had my first appointment with endinocrology today and been put on 20mg carbimazole. i have not exercised for ages because i have felt so awful but feel much better on beta blockers. is it ok for me to exercise - if not aerobic then light exercise?

I was advised NOT to exercise, and in fact I couldn't as I was so weak and my muscles shot to pieces. After working out regularly in the gym for years, it seemed my fitness levels went over night! So unfair! My mind was willing, but my body was weak. Check with your GP, but mine was adament I wasn't to do any aerobic exercise. He's only recently said I could do a bit more exercise but my confidence has dwindled because I think if my heart races I'll end up in hospital again.

I now walk every day, but have put all the weight on I lost. My thyroid was overactive and very high, but now is in the normal range and am on 5mg Carbimazole once a day.

Take care. Hope this helps. I think you have to listen to your body and try a little exercise, but don't expect to get back to a full regime - you will suffer. I got so frustrated not being able to go to the gym.

my initial symptom of hyperthyroidism was tremor. I got rid of the tremor using herbs (still not diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at this point) but any exercise would bring the tremor back. Have now been on anti-thyroid drugs for quite a while and am back in normal range when tested. I'm able to exercise a bit, but avoid anything that would impact joints too much. My guess is that low-imact exercise methods like Tai Chi are probably ideal. I've seen old Chinese exercising in parks, squares and streets, and they look healthier than most 20 year olds do in the west, so if it works for them I don't see why it shouldn't work for you or me. Swimming also ideal. Jogging and cycling have too much impact on the joints.

I too was advised not to do any exercise that would get my heart rate up! So I couldn't go back to kick boxing, which I loved, or run or go to the gym. I don’t think I would've coped with that sort of situation anyway because of the sweats and panics.

But now I am feeling a bit better with those so I’m trying to walk more… but that’s about it!

It’s so frustrating because you're putting on weight with the condition so you just want to get fit.

Good luck everyone. Stay positive.
