I took a 40 mg pill a week ago and a 30 mg pill yesterday and today i feel really weird and also i think bezare stuff....Do you think that this has anything to do with the medicane...?
I take 40mg as and when needed (up to 1 x 3 tiems a day) which hasnt been for a good few months now, but even when I was on them I personally didnt feel any different apart from thinking "Ive taken this now i'll be ok" and after a week or so of taking a few tablets when needed My anxiety returned to (higher than the average person) but my personal average
Propranolol is from a class of drugs known as beta blockers. One of its common side effects is sleep disturbances and in particular vivid nightmares. It can more rarely cause hallucinations, psychoses, mood changes. This is due to the is ability to pass through the blood brain barrier. There are other beta blockers which are less likely to do this however that will depend on what reason you are using the propranolol. Speak to a pharmacist if you would like further information. I hoped this helped.
Thanks.Yes, psychotic ideas...And if i stop taking it they will go away?
Psychosis is a rare side effect of the propranolol and it is not possible to know whether it is the cause in your case without you first weaning off the drug. It is important for you to discuss this with your doctor before deciding to come off as you cannot stop propranolol immediately without a dose reduction.
Another consideration is whether the psychosis is unrelated to your use of propranolol and again it is important for you to discuss this with your doctor. I hope this helps.
Again, thanks for your answer.I want to ask you one last question. Why i can't stop taking propanolol? From the start i took propranolol only when i had a hight heart rate (i had this from insomnia) and the doctor told me to take 20 mg every time i had one.I have taken propranolol only two times, one was a week ago (40 mg) and the other was the day before i got this strange thought (20 mg).I didn't have a standard pattern taking it.Also today i had some really weird dreams and when i woke up i had a hypnagogic hallucination but only for a few seconds. The weird tought that i had has almost disappear...
If you've only taken it on an 'as required' basis then it should be ok to stop immediately. However if you have been taking continually for a period of time of more than 2/3 wks then you will need to gradually reduce. Vivid dreams are a side effect of beta blockers. Discuss stopping or an alternative with your doctor. Hope that helps.
Thanks for all your answers they were really helpfull!!
My own opinion feels you could have been started on a lower dose and as your system got use to it, then increase. It has a very calming effect. It is used as a beta blocker for arrythmias, for blood pressure, and for what they call high strung people. Dancers like ballerinas take Inderal. I have been taking the drug since 1970 for cardiac arrythmias and now with age it really helps my blood pressure down too. I never once felt weird or had crazy thoughts. I think the anxiety is playing tricks on you. Possibly reading too much of the same comments on here. This is a very safe drug with excellent results on the market for eons. People read all these comments and suddenly by the poswer of suggestion you can create your own panic attacks out of fear. I moved over the years and had doctors who wanted to change the medication to time capsules and I refused. I can break my tablet in half if I feel I dont need as much. My doctor trust my judgement with me adjusting the dosage since I have been taking for 40 some years. I would opt to start on a low dosage of anything for anxiety and work your way up to a safe dosage. Report breathing issues, rapid heart rate and rashes to the doctor immediately.
