Can SS raise your blood presure

A year ago my BP was 110/70 before this latest crazy 'flair' started and I was back on 400 mg plaquinile daily. Now 14 months later it fluctuates between 148/110 and 140/100. At the triage last week I was asked if I am on BP meds (which I am not on ...always have had low BP). The rheum I see and who does see my results has never mentioned it. So I was wondering if I need to see a cardiologist (had very intensive tests including angiogram CT done nearly 3 years ago and everything was fine) but if its due SS then no point in going to see cardiologist.

any insights would be appreciated.

I have high blood pressure and have done since I was 39, I have had SS since I was 29.  I did read somewhere that it can affect your blood pressure.  If you are in the USA I was prescribed Micardis 20 mg and it has worked fine for years.

I just had my heart checked and everything their is fine.

Mandy

I've had SS all my life, am in my 60s, and just yestetday in doc's office 114/80. That was 10 -25 pts high on the bottom number. I'm often at 100/60, sometimes lower.

This is my theory. I am 44, a very anxious person and have had hbp since I was 38. But never crazy high. Just diagnosed with sjogrens. Starting in may of 2017- woke up with white coating on tongue. Md  gave me a mouthwash that didn’t help. I came back and he ordered a star hiv test. That turned out negative. Next thing I knew- I was running to the Er thinking I was having a heart attack. I had a terrible blood pressure spike in Er. They did an ekg normal. Happened again  in another md office and she tested me for an adrenal tumor. That was negative. I don’t know if the anxiety of the illness causes blood pressure spikes or your body just being off and in a state of inflammation causes it.

I'm so glad you mentioned anxiety, Snailj, because it's been obvious in your questions about saliva meds. Perhaps it's time to ask your doc for help with the anxiety?

No matter what you should see a cardiologist. If you question yes you should.  I have been a cardiac nurse for 40 yrs please do.  I have had all symptoms of SS  but not positive blood work

Hi Shaq,  I am sorry you are going through this.  My SS has gone into my organs, NOT saying this is happening to you by any means, BUT it might be a good idea to see a cardio.  That is where I started, and they sent me to a kidney doctor, as it turned out my BP issues were due to my adrenal glands and kidneys...which can control our BP issues sometimes...as was with my case.  My kidney specialist has finally gotten my BP under control with meds for my kidneys, and adjusted my other meds.  It has taken over a year, nearly 2 with adjustments now and again, but I am feeling much better now.  My BP was all over the place after being under control with meds before this all happened to me.  So, it would not be a bad idea to be checked out.  Like I said, it may not be your adrenals or kidneys, but it sure would be good to find out.  The kidney doc can run some simple tests and find out right away, instead of running expensive cardio tests, but you may need to have both.  I did because I had BP heart issues before.  I have other organ involvement as well, but I sure feel better now that my kidney doctor keeps in communication with my other specialists!!  I wish you luck!!  Please keep us posted as to how you are doing.  Deidra

If you are nervous or in pain your systolic number will be up.  Which is the top number The bottom number is your diastolic which usually stays the same. So top number will go up 20 to 30 systolic. which will be normal for pain etc

I do have help with anxiety.  Sounds like you are assuming I haven’t.have been recently diagnosed. Of course I am struggling with this. Perhaps I sound especially anxious to you. But yes- I am addressing my anxiety with a professional and trying to get some support on here.  Thanks.

Thank you for all your replies.

I will draw the rheums attention to BP on next visit and make appointment with a cardiologist (at least a consultation and mention my SS and see what she says) . At the last visit (2015) I found I have IRBB (something to do with electrical impulses of the heart) and mildly regurgitating mitral valve...., nothing much to worry about and no treatment needed.

Also found I have fibrosis of apical tips of lungs....no symptoms so nothing to worry about.

Deidra, I had the liver function and kidney function tests last month and they came back normal.

I know that my gastroenterologist thinks that my GERD, gastritis, esophagitits  and Barretts esophagus are due to SS...even had a colonoscopy coz stool test report came back for emergency further investigation due possible major blockage.....again found nothing and biopsies came back all clear.

Thanks again everyone

Hi not sure if it is related. Best go to doctors to get advice. All the best xx
